For Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Great Britain, the news of an imminent trade agreement with the United States is a much needed political victory, as well as the justification of his strategy to diligently cultivate President Trump.
The details of the agreement were not yet clear and could be controversial with farmers and other interest groups in Great Britain. Mr. Trump’s announcement On social media, even high British officials seemed to catch overwhelmed, after weeks of negotiations characterized by two-step forward, one-step behind progress.
But the fact that Great Britain is the first country in the world to conclude a deal with the United States after Mr Trump had imposed a 10 percent rate of 10 percent on dozens of American trading partners, the “special relationship” seemed to be often invoked by British and American diplomats.
In his position on Wednesday evening, Mr Trump ringed a “large trade agreement with representatives of a large and highly respected country.” He said the deal would be announced in Washington on Thursday morning.
Great Britain, even under a Center-left Labor government, has escaped the harsh criticism that Mr Trump has trained on the European Union and China, which he both accuses of the “deduction” of the United States in their trade relationships.
This partly reflects the economy: Great Britain and the United States have fairly balanced trade flows. Great -Britain has a trade surplus of $ 89 billion or a shortage of $ 14.5 billion with the United States, depending on whether they quote British or American statistics.
The difference is partly based on how the two parties treat offshore financial centers such as Jersey and Guernsey, which are semi -autonomous. It is crucial that the trade in goods, with which Mr Trump is the most fixed, is relatively balanced.
But it also reflects the tireless diplomatic outreach of Mr. Starmer to Mr. Trump. In February the prime minister showed up in the Oval Office With a letter from King Charles IIIInvite Mr Trump to pay a rare second state visit to Great Britain. Mr. Starmer has since kept in touch with Mr. Trump since he regularly spoke with him by telephone about pets, such as the Trump Turnberry Golf Club of the President in Scotland.
Mr. Starmer has steadily refused to criticize Mr Trump, either on trade or his statements about Ukraine and his war with Russia. The prime minister has tried to act as a bridge between Europe and the United StatesCoaching President VolodyMyr Zensky van Ukraine about how he was gorge with Mr. Trump can recover after the two men a few days after the much friendlier visit from Mr. Starmer stood in an oval office.
Great -Britain had other benefits in dealing with the United States. His new ambassador in Washington, Peter MandelsonHad been a trade commissioner at the European Union and has been steeped in the mechanics of trade negotiations.
But the British had to navigate through the foibles of Trump government, in which trade discussions exist on two different levels: the substantive negotiations between teams of the American trade representative and the British Handelsministerie, and the grilling of Mr. Trump, who liked to be a showcase, but whose deal.
At home, the deal can help fascinate the sputtering trust of Great Britain. Mr. Starmer struggled with it falter economic growthAs well as by the government, who led its government to a series of unpopular movements, such as curbing a subsidy to help the elderly pay their winter heating accounts.
But the deal could also present Mr. Starmer some obstacles, including his efforts to reset trade relations with the European Union after Brexit. Some analysts have suggested that Great Britain will have to choose whether they join the United States or Europe – something that British officials reject as a false choice.
As the conditions of the deal become clear, British farmers will see if their agricultural products, in particular chicken and beef, will be protected against American import. The government had drawn a red line against allowing American’s import “Chlorinated” chicken Or chemically treated beef.
