Freevee is over, report says. What it means for free streaming on Prime Video
Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming service, Freevee, will no longer exist Deadline reported on Tuesday. The company plans to discontinue the service in the coming weeks in regions where it is currently offered, namely the US, Germany, Austria and the UK.
Customers can still access Freevee content within the Prime Video streaming app, whether they have an Amazon Prime account or not. Original programming such as Jury Duty, Alex Rider and Judy Justice will stream via Prime Video, along with other content under the Freevee umbrella. If you don’t have a Prime Video account, you’ll see titles marked as “Watch Free” when you open the app. Prime Video subscribers will see no change in content when Freevee closes, according to Deadline.
It’s unclear when the Freevee migration will be complete for US customers. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Initially launched in 2019 as IMDb Freedrive with the name IMDb TV, the platform was rebranded as Freevee in 2022. Since then, Amazon has built a slate of original and licensed movies and TV shows, including Bosch: Legacy, The Lego Movie, The Good Wife, Shameless, Bewitched, and Project Runway. The streaming service also includes some Amazon originals, such as the first three seasons of The Boys and a series of live FAST channels that air 24/7.
The move comes as Amazon ramps up new upgrades to Prime Video, like the AI-powered one X-ray overview function and a redesign rolled out last summer. For more streaming news, check out our coverage of what it’s like to stream Prime Video with ads, our NFL guide, and free movies to watch this month.
