Gardener shares chore you MUST do now that it’s September and cold
Some gardening tasks are more exciting than others.
And weeding probably isn’t high on the list when it comes to enjoyment.
But a horticultural expert has revealed there’s a key reason why now is the best time to weed your green space.
“During winter dormancy, not only does the grass grow more slowly, but weeds also grow less,” says lawn care specialist Chrissie Handley.
“This means that now is an ideal time to tackle them so that they cannot grow unchecked in the spring.”
And although temperatures have dropped considerably over the past week, it is actually the perfect temperature for weeding.

“Moist, loose soil can make it easier to pull weeds out by the roots, so this process is best done during milder, wetter winter temperatures, rather than during freezing temperatures,” says Chelsea, of onlineturf.nl told the Emphatic.
If you start weeding now, the weeds will not grow back in the spring, so it is important to do it right.
“If you make sure you remove the entire root of the weed, the plants are completely eradicated and cannot come back,” the researcher said.
Another important factor to remember is how to care for your lawn during particularly wet weeks – a common problem for UK residents.
“If you get a lot of rain in the winter, your lawn may not be able to handle the amount of water properly,” she says.
“You will notice that the waterlogged spots will disappear by themselves as you let them dry.”
But if your garden needs a little extra help, there are garden tools you can use to help.
“If that doesn’t work, you can aerate the lawn with a garden fork to promote drainage,” Chelsea adds.
To get rid of weeds, people often use viral TikTok tricks like pouring boiling water over weeds.
But Peter Chaloner, director of Cobra Lawn Mowers, has advised gardeners not to follow the crowd and try the tricks for themselves.
Garden tips and tricks
“Don’t use chemicals, boiling water and white vinegar that are said to work because you risk killing the surrounding grass and doing more harm than good,” he said.
“The most effective way is to just dig.
“Take a hand trowel or a special weed whacker and dig around the weeds, but make sure you get deep under the root to make sure the weeds are completely removed.”
