Girls from Bangladesh trafficked to Gujarat, father seeks custody
AHMEDABAD: Gujarat HC on Wednesday sought to know when the Center would deport two Bangladeshi minors, allegedly rescued from meat trade in India. HC’s investigation into the final time limit for the girls deportation proceedings came after their father arrived in India and filed a habeas corpus petition seeking custody of his daughters.
The city’s crime branch rescued the girls from an apartment in Vastral in August and arrested Sagar Mondal for smuggling them to India and forcing them into prostitution. He was also accused of raping one of the sisters. Police also arrested the girls’ mother and another woman, who was married to Mandal.
The state government had opposed the deportation of the girls, saying their presence might be needed to testify against Mandal. It had also said that since the Union Home Ministry was involved in the process, it could not determine the exact date of their deportation.
A further hearing will take place on December 4.
