Google Gemini app – the company’s conversational chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI) – is now available in India, CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Tuesday. The app, which Google first launched in the US in February, gives users access to the capabilities of Gemini – Google’s family of Large Language Models (LLMs). It makes the app available to users in English and nine Indian languages. Additionally, Google is rolling out support for these languages to Gemini Advanced as well.

Gemini App Now in India

In a blog afterGoogle has announced that the Gemini app is now available on the Google Play Store in India. It supports a total of 10 languages: English, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. To access the AI chatbot, users can download the Gemini app or sign up via Google Assistant.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai made the announcement via a after on X (formerly Twitter). Additionally, Gemini Advanced — the LLM under the Google One plan with a larger token context window — is also getting an upgrade, Google said. It will leverage the power of Gemini 1.5 Pro in English, as well as the same nine Indian languages that the Gemini app supports.

With Gemini Advanced, users can now upload documents of up to 1,500 pages or 100 emails and ask the AI chatbot to summarize them. It will also provide insights based on the content. Google says Gemini Advanced can now “clean, explore, analyze and visualize your data” from within spreadsheets created in Google Sheets, CSVs or Excel.

The company says these files are not used to train the AI models and are kept private from the user. While the Gemini app is rolling out to Android users in India via the Google Play Store, iOS users can only access it via the Google app.

While the feature was already available for users outside the country, Indian users can now have conversations with the AI chatbot within the Messages app. The feature is rolling out to select devices, requiring an Android device with 6GB of RAM or above.
