Google Chrome rolls out quick way to unsubscribe from notifications

Google Chrome is getting new features aimed at improving protection against online threats and better managing your privacy with the September 2024 Update. The revamped Safety Check feature now warns users about potential security issues and takes actions on their behalf, such as revoking permissions and flagging unwanted notifications. It also makes it easier to unsubscribe from website notifications and lets users grant websites access to certain permissions just once.

Google Chrome Security Check Update

In a blog afterGoogle announced the new September 2024 update for Chrome, which includes the revamped Safety Check feature. One of the most notable additions is the one-tap unsubscribe. Chrome users can now remove unwanted website notifications by simply tapping the Unsubscribe option in the notification drawer. The company claims that this feature has resulted in about a 30 percent reduction in notification volume on supported Pixel devices.

Safety Check on Chrome now runs automatically in the background, Google says. It notifies the user and takes actions on their behalf, including removing permissions from rarely visited websites. By leveraging Google Safe Browsing, it also claims to protect users from abusive notifications from misleading websites. Chrome users can then review the actions and undo them if they wish.

Desktop users will get notifications if any of their installed Chrome extensions pose a security risk. Other Google Safe Browsing protections, including the option to receive notifications and change compromised passwords, can also be enabled via a “Safety at a glance” dashboard, the company said.

For enhanced privacy, Google Chrome will now give users the option to grant certain permissions, such as camera or microphone, for one time only. The browser will automatically revoke them once the user leaves the website.

On Android, users can go to Institutions in Google Chrome to access the Safety Check feature. Desktop users, meanwhile, can find it under the Privacy and security label in the browser settings. The features are rolling out with the Google Chrome 128 update for smartphones, desktops and other devices.
