To help businesses celebrate the diversity of their owners, Google Maps is getting a new LGBTQ+-owned feature that will appear in the About tab.
This entirely optional feature that businesses can assign themselves will come in just before the end of Pride month, helping customers and owners better find local gay-friendly spots and celebrate the diversity of their neighborhood.
Currently, anyone in the US with a verified business profile on Google can add this new feature in a few easy steps:
- go to you Company Profile (opens in new tab) and click Edit profile
- Under Company Information, look for the More tab at the top of the page
- Select the category you want to change here and set the attribute to Yes or No
- If everything is set up correctly, hit save and your company’s Google profile will be updated
The new feature should help make LGBTQ+-owned businesses more visible to those unfamiliar with the environment. It empowers customers to better find and support these locations and gives owners a new forum to promote their business as a safe place for members of the queer community.
The new LGBTQ+-owned tag joins the Black-owned, Latino-owned, veteran-owned, and women-owned options already available through Google Maps.
Businesses can use multiple attributes at once to celebrate their diverse ownership
However, searching through the Info tabs of all the nearby businesses will be difficult, so luckily there is an easier option. To find a location in your area tagged with one of these attributes, type LGBTQ+ property (or any of the others) into the Google Maps search bar and businesses that describe themselves will be highlighted.
As with many of its new features, this new LGBTQ+ tag option on Google Maps is currently only available to businesses in the US. We expect it to roll out to other territories in the not-too-distant future, but we’ve reached out to a Google representative to get confirmation.
