Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: release date and price
- From $1,799 / £1,749 / AU$2,699
- Pre-orders are available from August 13th
- Available for sale from September 4th
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold was announced on August 13 alongside the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL. It’s available for pre-order now and will ship on September 4. Check out our dedicated Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold pre-order deals page for a full list of available deals.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold starts at $1,799 / £1,749 / AU$2,699, for which you get a model with 256GB of storage. There’s also a configuration with 512GB of storage, which costs $1,919 / £1,869 / AU$2,899.
For comparison, the original Google Pixel Fold started at $1,799 / £1,749 (around AU$2,655), so prices are largely the same this year.
That’s still a steep price, but Google is offering at least a year of Google One AI Premium subscription with every Pixel 9 Pro Fold purchase.
Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: design and display
- Slimmer and lighter than the original
- An 8-inch foldable screen and a 6.3-inch cover screen
The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a silky-matte back with a satin metal frame and a polished hinge, which Google says is durable. The rest of the phone should be fairly durable too, with it using Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the outer display and back, and it has an IPX8 rating, meaning it’s water resistant but not dust proof.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold – which comes in Obsidian (black) or Porcelain (off-white) – unfolds completely flat unlike its predecessor, and is also slimmer, measuring 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.5mm when folded and 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.1mm when unfolded. The original Pixel Fold is 12.1mm and 5.8mm when folded and unfolded respectively.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is also lighter, at 257 grams, compared to the 283 grams of its predecessor, despite having larger displays.
Here’s an 8.0-inch 2,076 x 2,152 OLED foldable display with 373 pixels per inch, a refresh rate that can vary from 1Hz to 120Hz, and a peak brightness of 2,700 nits — up from just 1,450 nits on the original Pixel Fold.
It also has a 6.3-inch 1080 x 2424 OLED cover display with 422 pixels per inch, a 60-120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 2,700 nits. The original Pixel Fold’s displays, for reference, are smaller, at 7.6 and 5.8 inches.
Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Cameras
- A 48MP main camera, 10.5MP ultra-wide camera and 10.8MP telephoto camera
- Smart AI editing tools
The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a triple-lens rear camera setup, with a 48MP f/1.7 main sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 10.5MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens (with a 127-degree field of view), and a 10.8MP telephoto lens with OIS, which can offer 5x optical zoom and up to 20x digital zoom.
The ultra-wide camera doubles as a macro lens, and there’s also a 10MP f/2.2 camera on the front and a 10MP f/2.2 camera on the foldable screen. For video, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold can record in up to 4K quality at up to 60 frames per second.
These specs are similar to those of the original Pixel Fold, but the ultra-wide and selfie cameras have new sensors this year.
Like the rest of the Pixel line, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is packed with shooting modes and features.
There’s a night mode, an astrophotography mode, a portrait mode and more, along with more unusual features like ‘Add Me’ – an AI tool that lets you merge two photos together so the photographer taking a group shot can also be in the shot.
There’s also Magic Editor, which uses AI to tweak images in a variety of ways. For example, you can move a subject to a different spot in the photo, change the background of the image, or enlarge the image to capture more of the scene.
Other AI tools include Best Take (which combines group photos so everyone looks their best), Magic Eraser (to remove unwanted elements from a photo), Photo Unblur, and many more.
Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Performance and software
- A Google Tensor G4 chipset
- 4GB more RAM than the original Pixel Fold
- Seven years of software updates
The Tensor G4 chipset powers the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. While it’s probably not the best smartphone chipset available based on past results, it should be a significant upgrade over the Tensor G2 used in the original Pixel Fold.
There’s also more RAM, 16GB instead of 12GB, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a Titan M2 security coprocessor, stereo speakers, a fingerprint sensor and face unlock.
For software, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold runs Android 14, with the promise of seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Feature Drop updates. Also note that Android 15 is supposed to launch soon, so expect an update for that soon.
There are also many AI features here, in addition to those used in photography. For example, there is Pixel Screenshots, which allows you to save, organize and retrieve information from screenshots with Gemini Nano.
And there are features that take advantage of it being a foldable phone, like the ability to use multiple apps in split screen.
Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Battery
- 4,650mAh battery
- 24+ hours of battery life or up to 72 hours with Extreme Battery Saver
The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a 4,650mAh battery, which isn’t huge, especially when you consider that the original Pixel Fold had a larger 4,821mAh battery.
Still, Google claims the Pixel 9 Pro Fold can last up to 24 hours on a single charge, and if you use the Extreme Battery Saver mode, you can get up to 72 hours of life. It also supports fast charging with a 45W charger and wireless charging.
Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Outlook
The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a larger yet thinner and lighter foldable phone than its predecessor, with a two-generation newer chipset, 4GB more RAM, and a brighter display. All for the same starting price.
That’s a promising upgrade, but it’s still a very expensive phone with a smaller battery than the original Pixel Fold.
We’ll be testing the battery extensively in our full Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold review, but assuming it holds up to the device well, this should be a compelling foldable option.
