Google Pixel Buds Pro 2: Leaks, rumors and everything we know so far
We’re just a few days away from a series of major Google product announcements. The Made By Google event is taking place on August 13, and while the big stars of the show will be the Pixel 9 phones, we’re also expecting to see the official unveiling of the Google Pixel Buds Pro 2. Their existence isn’t exactly a secret, with details having been leaking for weeks , which means we know a lot about them already. Here’s what you need to know.
Google Pixel Buds Pro 2: expected release date and prices
The Google Pixel Buds Pro 2 will almost certainly make their debut on August 13 during the Made By Google event.
Pricing hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the current model, the Google Pixel Buds Pro, launched with an MSRP of $199 / £179 / AU$299, putting it below key competitors like Apple’s AirPods Pro.
The AirPods Pro 2 have an MSRP of $249 / £249 / AU$399, and we expect Google to drop that price again with the Buds Pro 2.
The price of almost all technology has gone up in recent years, though. So we still expect a price tag below Apple’s, but it could be a bit higher than the original Pixel Buds Pro.
One leak suggests we’re looking at $229 / £219 (around AU$350), or €249 in Europe. It’s just a rumour (so take it with a pinch of your favourite spice), but here’s the thing…
Google Pixel Buds Pro 2: Design upgrades
The most recent Pixel Buds Pro 2 leaks show off a slightly bulkier-looking case and a slight redesign of the Buds Pro themselves, including a new bump near the eartip that we suspect is there to make them fit more comfortably and securely. They also appear to have wingtips similar to, but smaller than, those of the Pixel Buds A-Series.
The launch colors are said to be Charcoal, Porcelain, Aloe (to match the Pixel 8a), and Hot Pink.
Another leak that appears to be an actual product ad reveals a bit more: the capacitive touchscreen appears to be significantly larger this time around. Android Central suspects that this is partly due to a larger battery, which has forced Google to rethink the layout somewhat.
One interesting detail is that there is a new cutout on the case next to the USB-C port. Speculation says that it is a speaker for Find My Device, which allows you to hear where you left your case if you lose it.
Google Pixel Buds Pro 2: new features
The new Buds may have more fitness features, since they’re being developed alongside the Pixel Watch 3. But what we’d most like to see are improvements over what’s already there. The Pixel Buds Pro currently lag behind Apple a bit when it comes to noise cancellation and call quality, and regulatory filings indicate that we’re looking at improved battery capacity in the charging case.
Better Bluetooth is likely – the current Buds Pro run v5.0 – and if Google doesn’t have some AI features to talk about, we’ll eat our earbuds. There don’t appear to have been any software details leaked so far, though, and you obviously can’t guess what it might be just by looking at pictures of the hardware, pretty as it is.
As soon as we have concrete information, we will of course keep you informed. For now we wait…
