Google rolls out September security patch for Pixel smartphones

Google has begun rolling out the Android 14 September security patch to the latest Pixel 9 series and older models. The update doesn’t introduce any new notable features, but it does address critical security vulnerabilities that, if left unpatched, could leave users vulnerable to compromise by malicious actors. The development comes amid Google’s announcement of the Android 15 AOSP release, which will debut on Pixel devices in the coming weeks.

According to According to the Pixel Update bulletin for September, the security patch brings fixes for multiple vulnerabilities ranging from high severity to critical. One vulnerability, numbered CVE-2024-32896, “has the potential for limited, targeted exploitation.” The update’s changelog on the Pixel simply states, “This update fixes critical bugs and improves the performance and security of your device.”

Android September 14 security patch rolled out for Pixel

With the Android 14 September patch, Google says it has fixed 11 security vulnerabilities that were patched on September 1, while the September 5 patch brings the total number of fixed vulnerabilities to 36.

The Over-the-Air (OTA) update for supported Google Pixel smartphones has started rolling out. Gadgets 360 staff was able to verify its availability on Pixel. Factory and OTA images of the update are also available now. The following devices are eligible for the update:

  1. Google Pixel 6 Series
  2. Google Pixel 7 Series
  3. Google Pixel 8 Series
  4. Google Pixel Fold
  5. Google Pixel 9 Series

Google also announced that the Pixel 5a has reached the end of its lifecycle. It will not be eligible for the latest Android 14 September patch or any other future updates.

Android 15 Rollout

Google has also announced that Android 15 has been released and the source code has also been released on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This allows developers to manipulate the operating system (OS) and create custom variants for their respective devices.

The update will first roll out to eligible Pixel series phones in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, supported smartphones from other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Samsung, Oppo, and OnePlus will also receive the Android 15 update in the coming months.
