Google’s new AI tool will generate responses in an interactive style
Google on Monday released a new experimental artificial intelligence (AI) tool aimed at helping users learn more about new topics. The tool, called Learn About, differs from the Mountain View-based tech giant’s usual AI offerings, such as Gemini or AI Overviews. The experimental tool displays the information in a visual and interactive style and extracts the data from educational sources. The Google Learn About AI tool is built using the LearnLM Large Language Model (LLM), instead of the Gemini AI models.
The tech giant detailed the Learn About tool in a filing page. Google called it a “conversational learning companion” and said the experimental tool will help users fulfill their learning goals. The platform is currently only available to select users in the US, and other regions cannot access it.
Interestingly, the tech giant used another AI model called LearnLM for the AI tool. The AI model was unveiled at the Google I/O event and the company said it is based more on education and research data and tailored to the way people learn.
Learn About uses visual and interactive styles and shares images, articles and videos to help users learn about new topics. The edge tested the tool and found that the same prompt shared with Gemini and Learn About generated significantly different results.
For one particular prompt, Gemini reportedly showed an answer that quoted Wikipedia. However, Learn About has reportedly shared an image from an educational website and added related content so that users can dive deep into the topic and related concepts. The AI tool is said to also avoid the common hallucinations that Google’s AI models experience.
Learn About also offers interactive guides on complex topics, allowing users to systematically navigate through a range of concepts to fully understand them. Furthermore, misconceptions about the topic are also highlighted so that users can avoid them.
Separately, Google has also released a new Utilities extension for the Gemini app. The expansion allows the Gemini AI assistant on Android devices to control smartphone functions. It can control native apps and functions such as alarm, timer, volume control, camera and more.
