Got Tubi? Here Are Three Sci-Fi Spectaculars With Over 90% On Rotten Tomatoes That You Can Stream For Free
Tubi is one of the larger free streaming services, and in the US it has a surprisingly good selection of movies. While the selection isn’t as great in other territories, like the UK, where it recently launched with over 20,000 movies and shows in early July, the US catalog has some of our favorite movies, including some of the best sci-fi films.
So if you’re looking for futuristic action and adventure, but don’t want to pay for one of the best streaming services to watch it, Tubi is a great choice—if you can stomach a few ads, of course. Here are three must-see sci-fi movies that you can stream for free on Tubi.
Source code
It is fitting that watching a film over and over again makes you watch it more often. Source code is a kind of science fiction Groundhog Daythe story of a heroic helicopter pilot played by Jake Gyllenhaal who dies over and over again in a terrorist attack on a train. His mission is to discover the identity of the bomber and prevent the tragedy from happening, and it’s great, edge-of-your-seat fun. According to rich “It’s brilliantly constructed, it’s an eight-minute cycle with variations, each time moving the plot forward… [it is] a thrilling, intellectually stimulating science fiction thriller that also appeals emotionally.”
Snow drill
In a post-apocalyptic ice age, the remnants of the human race find themselves on a super train traveling around the world, the Snow drill of the title, as they fight to survive. According to Flick party it’s “a mix of science fiction and social commentary that plays out like a video game… Plus Chris Evans’ best performance.” Sky Cinema says “it’s literally one hell of a ride – Brazil meets Murder on the Orient Express.” According to the Patriot Ledger “There’s no easy way to categorize this English-language film from Korean writer-director Joon-ho Bong other than to say it’s a true original.” The Wall Street Journal loved it: “Once Mr. Bong sets his monorail in motion, the film gathers an irresistible momentum, accelerated by nonstop chaos, gallows humor and an immersive visual style that possesses an intoxicating sense of the steampunk apocalypse.”
The Terminator
I just rewatched this film a few weeks ago and was struck by how well it still holds up today: the effects are very dated – it feels very Clash of the Titans compared to today’s slick CGI – but the film is a tense, taut horror story about a killer who will never give up and who seemingly cannot be stopped. The Boston Globe said, the acting is terrible and the whole thing is very silly, but that doesn’t matter because director James Cameron “has the formula down pat.” As Taste thread say it: “A lot of Terminators “Cameron’s greatness comes from its low-budget aesthetic and lo-fi energy; perhaps out of necessity, Cameron has a spare, efficient style of storytelling that he and the series long ago abandoned.”
