Govt declares June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday, June 25, the day on which former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi Emergency in 1975, will be observed as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas‘.
“On June 25, 1975, in a brazen display of dictatorial mentality, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars through no fault of their own and the voice of the media was silenced,” Home Minister Amit Shah announced on X-sharing government notification.
“The Government of India has decided to celebrate June 25 every year as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’. This day will commemorate the immense contributions of all those who endured the inhuman pain of the 1975 Emergency,” he said.
“The decision of the government led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji is intended to honour the spirit of millions of people who struggled for the revival of democracy despite inexplicable persecution by an oppressive government.
“Celebrating ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ will help keep the eternal flame of individual freedom and defence of our democracy alive in every Indian, thereby preventing dictatorial forces like Congress from repeating these horrors,” the Home Minister said.
PM Modi had marked the beginning of the first session of the 16th Lok Sabha by throwing the issue of “Constitution” back to the INDIA bloc, asking everyone to ensure that there was no subversion of the Constitution as was done during the Emergency. PM had urged people to ensure that such an attempt to “misappropriate” the Constitution was never repeated and promised to protect it.
During the session, President Draupadi Murmu and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla referred to the Emergency in their speeches, triggering large-scale protests by the opposition.
