NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday issued a notification stating that June 25 ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas‘(Constitution Murder Day).
As stated in the notice, the letter was sent to recognize the struggle and sacrifices of individuals who resisted the excessive abuse of power that took place during the state of emergency.
By declaring June 25 as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Assassination Day), the government wants to pay tribute to the strength of India’s Constitution and democracy.
The letter said: “Whereas on 25th June 1975, Emergency was declared following which the then Government grossly misused its powers and the people of India were exposed to excesses and atrocities; And Whereas the people of India have an abiding faith in the Constitution of India and the strength of India’s resilient democracy.”
Following this, India’s Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted: “On June 25, 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, showing her dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of Indian democracy by declaring Emergency in the country. Lakhs of people were jailed for no reason and the voice of media was suppressed. The Government of India has decided to observe June 25 every year as ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’. This day will remind us of the immense contribution of all those people who suffered the inhuman pain of the Emergency of 1975.”
