Govt renames Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram to shed ‘colonial legacy’ | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: The central government on Friday announced the name of Blair Harbour in Andaman & Nicobar as “Sri Vijaya Puram“in an attempt to”colonial legacy“.
Sharing the government’s decision, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “Andaman and Nicobar Islands holds an unparalleled place in our freedom struggle and history.”
“Inspired by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji to free the nation from colonial influences, we have today decided to rename Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram,” Shah wrote on X.
He said Vijaya Puram “symbolises the victory we have achieved in our freedom struggle and the unique role played by the A&N Islands in it”.
The Home Minister said the island territory which “once served as a naval base of the Chola Empire is today poised to become the crucial base for our strategic and developmental ambitions”.
“It is also the place where the first unfolding of our Tiranga took place by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ji and also the cellular prison in which Veer Savarkar Ji and other freedom fighters fought for an independent nation,’ Shah wrote on X.
In 2018, Prime Minister Modi renamed three islands of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago in tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Ross Island has been renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, Neil Island Shaheed Dweep and Havelock Island Swaraj Dweep, Modi said during a speech amid loud applause from the audience here. The three islands are major tourist attractions.
