Govt scraps minimum export price for onions | India News – Times of India


NEW DELHI: The government on Friday scrapped a minimum price threshold it had previously set for onion exports, saying it would undermine the benefits of international abundance Unpleasant Indian farmersThe government had previously set a tariff of USD 550 per tonne as minimum export price (MEP), which essentially meant that farmers were not allowed to sell their produce abroad at a lower price.

The move comes ahead of elections in Maharashtra, a major onion-producing state.
This measure would promote the export of the product.
“The condition for minimum export price (MEP) for export of onion is withdrawn with immediate effect and until further orders,” the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.
