NEW DELHI: Government will soon come with a policy framework implement Carbon captureuse and storage (CCUS) initiatives in the country and make the Ministry of Energy the central agency to take these initiatives further.
CCUS refers to a range of applications that involve capturing carbon dioxide (CO2), usually from large point sources such as power plants or industrial facilities that use fossil fuels or biomass as fuel, so that the carbon dioxide is not released into the atmosphere.
The captured CO2 is mainly used in the fertilizer industry. It is also used for the production of synthetic fuels, chemicals and construction materials. Globally, the energy and industrial sectors are responsible for about 50% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Effective use of CCUS technologies can not only help India achieve its emission reduction goal, but also leads it to its goal. net zero target from 2070.
The Prime Minister’s Advisory Council on Science, Technology and Innovation (PM-STIAC) ​​​​has considered CCUS as one of the important measures to reduce carbon emissions in sectors that are difficult to reduce, such as cement, iron and steel, chemicals and power. On Tuesday, its various aspects were discussed and it was decided to set up a national portal for CCUS projects to bring all stakeholders together on a common platform.
The meeting, chaired by Ajay Kumar Sood, the government’s chief scientific adviser, also discussed India’s carbon market and carbon credit scheme to reduce emissions, chart a path towards a low-carbon economy and provide market support for mitigation methods and technologies.
Sood stressed the need to promote nationwide adoption of CCUS technologies and take this initiative forward through a mission mode approach.
Participants from various ministries including environment, earth sciences and energy also discussed the need to identify adoptable technologies and life cycle assessments of CCUS projects. It was noted that while there are standards for carbon capture and storage, standards for carbon utilisation and transport are still being developed.
