Guyana will play an important role in India’s energy security: PM Modi | India News – Times of India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali also held extensive discussions to improve multi-sectoral relations and strengthen bilateral ties.
Prime Minister Modi also emphasized that Guyana would play an important role in India’s energy security, and announced plans to establish a framework for long-term cooperation in this sector.
The visit marked a significant development in diplomatic relations: it was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in 56 years.
Modi arrived from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after attending the G20 summit.
India’s discussed plans to increase exports in this sector and defense cooperation between the nations.
Earlier, Guyanese President Irfaan Ali, along with colleague Mark Anthony Phillips and ministers, welcomed Modi at the airport and was later joined by Prime Ministers of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell and Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley at the hotel.
“The welcome to Guyana will remain etched in my memory. “I was pleased to meet you Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, Prime Minister @miaamormottley of Barbados and the respected Ministers of Guyana,” Modi shared on X.
In addition, Prime Minister Modi received the ‘Key of the City of Georgetown’, which symbolizes the strong relations between India and Guyana.
Guyanese President Irfan Ali praised Prime Minister Modi, calling him a ‘champion among leaders’ for his impactful leadership and contribution to the developing world.
“Thank you very much Prime Minister Modi. It is our greatest honor to have you here. You are a champion among leaders. You have led incredibly. You have shown light to the developing world and you have created development statistics and a framework that many are also .adopt in their own country and a lot of it is relevant to us here in Guyana,” said Ali.
“This meeting underlined the strengthening of ties between India and the Caribbean, built on shared values and a vision of mutual progress,” he wrote on X.
Prime Minister Modi and Ali also participated in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (A Tree for Mother) movement and planted a tree.
Prime Minister Modi’s program includes strategic discussions with Ali and an address to Guyana’s parliament, recognizing the historic Indian diaspora that migrated more than 185 years ago.
The MEA reports that approximately 3,20,000 people of Indian origin live in Guyana.
Modi arrived from the G20 summit in Brazil, where he met world leaders including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He previously visited Nigeria for bilateral talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and engagement with the diaspora.
