Hallmark launches a new Netflix rival, with an endless supply of cheap festive movies
Hallmark has unveiled what it calls an all-new streaming experience: Hallmark Plus. The new service replaces Hallmark Movies Now and offers an expanded catalog and real-world benefits, like Hallmark Gold Crown Store rewards and coupons.
The new service will launch in mid-September 2024 and promises to bundle the best of Hallmark into one service, while expanding its existing movie offerings and introducing a number of brand new series to compete with the best streaming services.
The new service doesn’t mean the end of Hallmark movies on Peacock, as the company has confirmed that the deal will go through. But Hallmark Plus is a sign that Hallmark, after dipping its toe in the streaming waters for a few years, is now ready to jump right in.
What to Expect from Hallmark Plus
Hallmark Plus will feature what the company calls “a diverse lineup of original titles” that adhere closely to Hallmark’s winning formula of heartwarming and cheerful: don’t expect a sudden burst of horribly violent, nihilistic slasher flicks like the best horror films, entertaining as that might be.
So far, the shows announced include Hallmark’s first limited holiday series Holidayed And Mistletoe Murders; a reality competition show called Finding Mr. Christmas; an “unscripted, ambitious series with an emphasis on heart, home and community” featuring many fan-favorite actors; Groomsmena new film trilogy inspired by The bridal veil and with an emphasis on the friendship between three main characters; and a series based on the bestseller The Chicken Sisters by KJ Dell’Antonia.
The new service costs $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year in the US and includes a number of perks, such as $5 monthly gift cards, unlimited eCards, store rewards and “surprise gifts.”
