Haters call me the ‘Lidl of the WAGs’ – but I’m having the last laugh with my comeback
A footballer’s wife was called the “Lidl of football wives” by a cruel troll, but she got the last word with her funny response.
Glasgow native Jilly Cross is married to former Rangers and current Motherwell star Andy Halliday.
But she is also hugely successful in her own right, with over 380,000 followers across her social media channels and her own fashion label, Dula.
Fans love her down-to-earth personality and Primark purchases, as well as her designer wardrobe and extravagant holidays.
Being in the spotlight on social media also sometimes attracts trolls.
After giving her followers a glimpse of her ‘mini-moon’ in Stockholm with her new husband, one hater wrote: ‘It’s funny that you think you’re a Wag and married to Andy Halliday.
“You’re just like the Lidl of Wags hahaha.”
Jilly responded with her typical humor and sarcastically hit back: “Do you mean Lidl as in small, thin? Wait, do you think I’m actually thin? [screams].”
She added: “Said Lidl as if I should be offended???”
The red-haired beauty’s clip quickly went viral, amassing more than 880,000 views.
And social media users are certainly supporting Jilly.
“Lidl is already elitist,” one insisted.
A second wrote: “Too funny… Lidl is class!! If they wanted to insult you they should have said something like the Co-op or something.”
A third replied: “The pain au chocolat from Lidl is one of the best pastries I’ve ever eaten… I’d take that as a compliment.”
A fourth added: “Your comebacks are legendary.”
“I think this is an amazing answer girl,” said a fifth.
A sixth said: “But hey, everyone loves Lidl, they’re just jealous.”
Jilly and Andy enjoyed an intimate wedding ceremony with fewer than 30 guests in her parents’ backyard in July after the football season ended.
It came after the down-to-earth duo made their marriage official at City Chambers in Glasgow and were driven to their reception in Jilly’s uncle’s black taxi.
Andy Halliday began his youth career at his boyhood club Rangers, but was released in 2006.
Two years later he made his first-team debut at Livingston, before signing for Middlesbrough at the age of 18 under the management of Gordon Strachan.
He played for Blackpool and Bradford City before returning to Ibrox in 2015, where he spent five years playing for the Glasgow club.
The midfielder joined Hearts in 2020 and moved to Motherwell at the start of this year. He has scored 53 goals in his career so far.
He is also a regular radio pundit for Clyde 1 Superscoreboard and for the Open Goal podcast, along with Si, Ferry and Paul Slane.
