‘He is a great friend’: Putin invites PM Modi for talks on sidelines of BRICS summit | India News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a separate bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia next month.
During a one-on-one conversation with National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, Putin conveyed his proposal and conveyed his warm greetings to Prime Minister Modi, describing him as “a good friend of ours.”
“I propose to hold a second meeting on October 22. Please send our warm greetings and best wishes to Mr Modi, he is a good friend of ours,” Putin told Doval.
At the request of Prime Minister Modi, NSA Doval briefed Putin about the Prime Minister’s meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky during his visit to Kiev.
“PM Modi wanted me to come to Russia especially to inform you about his visit to Ukraine and his meeting with President Zelenskyy. I was also at the meeting,” Doval told Putin.
Doval was also present at the BRICS National Security Advisers meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia on Wednesday, where he spoke about modern security challenges, including ICT-related issues and terrorism, and the need to address them through joint efforts within the BRICS framework.
In a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Russia stated: “NSA Shri Ajit Doval is participating in the BRICS NSAs meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia. During the sessions in the first half of the day, he spoke about modern security challenges, including ICT (information and communication technology) related issues and terrorism, and the need to address them through joint efforts within the BRICS framework.”
Russia holds the chairmanship of the BRICS for 2024 and the group recently expanded its membership with EgyptIran, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia. NSA Doval had earlier participated in the 13th BRICS NSA meeting in Johannesburg in July 2023.
In July, Prime Minister Modi visited Moscow, where he told Putin that the conflict in Ukraine could not be resolved on the battlefield. He followed this up with a visit to Kiev last month, where he reiterated India’s readiness to contribute in every possible way to a rapid return to peace. Upon his return, Modi spoke to Putin and indicated that India was ready to actively support any political or diplomatic settlement.
President Putin acknowledged that he is in constant contact with India, China and Brazil over the war in Ukraine and that these countries can play an important role in resolving the conflict.
