Heartbreaking: Australian Hockey Roos knocked out of Olympics in major upset

The Australian Hockeyroos’ Olympic season is over after a shock quarter-final defeat to China.

The Australian women went into the crucial match as heavy favourites, but were defeated 3-2 by eighth-placed China, who at one point were even leading 3-1.

The Hockeyroos have won three gold medals but have not stood on the podium since their last gold medal in Sydney 24 years ago.

They finished fifth in 2004, 2008 and 2012 and sixth in Rio 2016 and three years ago in Tokyo.

The disappointment comes just hours after the Australian men’s team was also knocked out in the quarter-finals by the Netherlands.
