Helldivers 2 is getting its biggest update yet next month
Helldivers 2 is getting its biggest update yet, with new enemies, increased difficulty, new mission objectives, and more coming on August 6th. The Escalation of Freedom update, announced alongside a new trailer on the PlayStation Blog Tuesday will be the biggest content drop for the online shooter. The free update will also add larger enemy outposts, in addition to increasing the difficulty.
Developer Arrowhead Game Studios gave a detailed breakdown of all the new additions to Helldivers 2 in August with the update The Escalation of Freedom. The major update, which would arrive six months after the game’s launch, is said to have taken player feedback into account. While Helldivers 2 has seen regular content drops, the new update will be the biggest yet.
Helldivers 2 update adds higher difficulty
Helldivers 2 features nine levels of increasing difficulty. The new update adds Combat Rating 10 difficulty, promising the most “unforgiving” helldiving experience. CR10: Super Helldive also brings better rewards in addition to the increased challenge.
Mission variety is also getting a boost with the update, with new objectives, larger enemy outposts for both Terminid and Automaton, and new Super Sample rewards. In addition to Super Helldive, the new objectives will also be playable on lower difficulties, the studio confirmed.
New enemy types, QOL changes
The Escalation of Freedom update also brings new enemies, including the Impaler, a fan-favorite enemy type from the first game. A new variant of the Charger is also joining the Terminid ranks. The Spore Charger’s location on the map remains unclear until players encounter it directly. The update also adds the Terminid Alpha Commander, a powered-up and larger Brood Commander that can summon other bugs for backup. The Automatons are also getting a new enemy type with the Rocket Tank.
Arrowhead Game Studios is also making changes to team kicking to address the issue of grief kicking in the game. With the new update, when a player gets kicked, they will spawn into a new game session as the host and carry over the team’s loot from their previous session. All loot can then be picked up before being extracted from the planet.
The studio is also promising a few quality-of-life changes with the big update, including a fix to the social menu for smoother helldiving with friends. The free update will be released on PS5 and PC on August 6.
