The bodies of a man and a woman have been found in Melbourne’s Maribyrnong River.

Victoria Police said a member of the public first spotted the man’s body in the water at Saltriver Place in Footscray around 9am on Sunday.

About 90 minutes later, another passerby found the body of a woman about a kilometre downstream near Smithfield Rd in Flemington

Both bodies have not yet been identified and police are investigating whether the deaths are suspicious and whether there is a connection between the two.

Footage from the crime scene shows police and forensic investigators taking photographs of the woman’s body on the riverbank.

A local fisherman who wished to remain anonymous and who happened to come across the woman’s body said he was alerted to what appeared to be trash floating on his line.

He said her head was covered with rags and a “blue material,” plastic garbage bags were tied around her feet and she had extensive bruising on her arm.

“I went closer and thought it was just a dummy – I hoped it was just a dummy,” he told the Herald Sun.

The local resident added that his years of experience in the Defense Department had taught him not to warn joggers in the area when he contacted Triple-0.

Hours later he was still fishing and said he didn’t want to go home because he “fishes every day, even at night… It’s my refuge.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
