How Jennifer Aniston’s Beautician Was Jailed for ‘Hiring a Hitman to Kill a Rival’
IT may sound like fiction, but the upcoming film Skincare is based on a true story about a Hollywood beautician who is accused of hiring a hitman to murder a rival.
The thriller follows Hope Goldman, a celebrity skin care guru, whose beauty business is sabotaged when rival Angel Vergara opens a boutique across the street.
Hope, played by Elizabeth Banks, discovers that her email account has been hacked. Messages are being sent pretending to be her name. Fake photos are also circulating online.
The film, which premieres on August 16, follows the beautician as he sets out to find the culprit to discover who is behind it all — and take him or her down.
While it undoubtedly sounds like a thrilling story that will keep viewers glued to the screen, many film buffs may not know that the film was inspired by real-life events.
The main character is loosely based on Dawn DaLuise, a famous beautician who was accused of soliciting someone to murder her fellow beautician Gabriel Suarez.
Dawn, who has worked with celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, Nicki Minaj and Sarah Mitchelle Gellar, was convinced that Gabriel was on a mission to ruin her career and reputation, and texted a friend saying she wanted to take him out. Daily Mail reported.
However, it was later proven that Gabriel had not committed any of the allegations, leading to an even stranger twist.
The one behind the career-damaging incident was in fact the friend she had messaged earlier.
In March 2014, Dawn’s empire collapsed when she was arrested and charged with incitement to murder.
Dawn, now 65, was arrested after her boyfriend Edward Feinstein called authorities, saying the beautician told him she had asked former NFL player Chris Geile to “take out” her rival across the street.
According to Dawn, she suddenly found herself at the centre of a hostile stalking campaign and received more than thousands of disturbing messages and threatening phone calls.
The famous beauty fanatic also claimed that someone had uploaded fake photos of her with her face edited into pornographic images. These photos were even posted on Craigslist asking who would fulfill her “rape fantasy” with her.
Dawn spent nearly a year in prison awaiting trial before being acquitted of all charges in January 2015, when authorities concluded there was no evidence that anyone was involved in the plan to kill her rival Gabriel.
Her boyfriend Chris, now retired from sports, also insisted he was never approached with a request to kill anyone.
Police later linked the gruesome ads to the boyfriend who originally reported her – Edward – and arrested him on suspicion of stalking.
After pleading guilty to one count of stalking Dawn, Edward and a man named Nick Prugo were both sentenced to community service a year later in 2016.
Dawn DaLuise – Successful Business Collapses
Before going to prison, DaLuise was a successful businesswoman.
At the Dawn DaLuise Skin Refinery in West Hollywood, the beauty guru has performed volumizing, plucking and waxing treatments on celebrities and lesser-known faces alike.
Her signature facial treatment – Galvanic Electrical Muscular Stimulation – and self-labeled beauty products have been praised by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Fashion, In StyleAnd Vanity Fair.
On her website, she lists Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Brad Pitt among her A-list clients.
Dawn, a mother of two, later appeared on Dr. Phil and admitted that she had sent a message to her friend saying that killing Gabriel was the only “solution” to ending the harassment and restoring her reputation.
However, she stressed that it was never her intention to actually go through with it.
“I did nothing wrong. I was abused and I was not guilty of a crime.”
The former beauty guru, who was diagnosed with cancer and lost her business while in prison, said: “This miscarriage of justice is insane and astonishing.
“My life is ruined. [Authorities] “I shot first and asked questions later,” she told People.
Talking about the thriller with Entertainment weeklyElizabeth, 50, claimed she only realised the film was based on real events “much later in the making process”.
“I had no idea. I had never heard of it. I was completely in love with Hope Goldman and this character and the kind of milieu of L.A.,” she said.
Mwanwhile Dawn, who opened another clinic in 2018, was not exactly amused when she realised her story was the inspiration for the film, as she feared it could negatively impact her future.
The beautician, who says she is trying to sell her story for a documentary, said: “It could take away my ability to tell my own story.”
