Canned Food Initiative, Love canned foodhelps busy parents keep their summer budgets in check with easy food replacements that can cut food bills by 31%, all by doing one simple thing: choosing canned food.

By making simple changes, such as choosing tinned fruit, vegetables, beef and fish, families can save up to £160 over the summer holidays. That’s a big saving considering the average family of four spends £129 a week on groceries.

The canned food experts compared a list of 25 popular household foods and found that canned food is often much cheaper, with more than two-thirds of the products costing a fraction of the price.

In fact, canned food is better than fresh food, both in price and taste.

A blind taste test by Manchester Metropolitan University comparing recipes using fresh ingredients with recipes using tinned ingredients found that in more than half of cases, tinned ingredients tasted as good or better than fresh ingredients.

This means families can save money by preparing canned meals, while still enjoying the great taste of home-cooked family meals.

CANNED QUESADILLAS!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1x can of chili con carne (x1 can)
  • Grated extra old cheddar or grated chilli cheese (50g)
  • Soft white tortilla wraps (x2)
  • 2x tsp oil

METHOD

Place the tortilla wraps down, divide the chili pepper over the two

Divide the chili evenly over half of the tortilla wrap

Divide the cheese evenly over the three wraps and sprinkle evenly over the top

Fold the wraps in half and press them gently

Heat a large non-stick pan over medium heat and add a teaspoon of oil

Cook each tortilla until browned, then flip and cook until browned

Once the filling is piping hot and the cheese has melted, remove it from the pan and cut it in half.

To serve

For an exciting twist, you can add other fillings such as jalapeno, red peppers, avocado, etc.
