Frederick Forsyth’s seminal 1971 thriller The Day of the Jackal has already spawned two big-budget films and is now getting a lavish 21st century TV remake.

Directed by Brian Kirk, known for his work on Game of Thrones, and written by Top Boy writer Ronan Bennett, the film stars Eddie Redmayne (Fantastic Beasts) as the Jackal, a sophisticated and elusive assassin.

While the original book was set in the 1960s and focused on an assassination attempt on French President Charles de Gaulle, this new ten-part series shifts the story to a modern setting and also delves deeper into the lone wolf’s backstory.

The target is now a fictional Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur whose new software threatens to expose the finances of the world’s wealthy elite. The Jackal also has to contend with being chased across Europe by a ruthless intelligence officer, played by Lashana Lynch (No Time to Die).

Don’t miss a single moment of excitement by following our guide to watching The Day of the Jackal anywhere in the world.

Tips for streaming The Day of the Jackal with a VPN

  • With four variables at play (your ISP, browser, video streaming provider, and VPN), experience and success may vary.
  • If you don’t see the location you want as the default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
  • If you’re having trouble watching after turning on your VPN and setting it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try to quickly resolve this. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address registered to your account. Second, some smart TVs (like Roku) don’t have VPN apps that you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll need to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you use (like your phone) so that every device on the Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases, after installing a network app, Smart TV services may ask you to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address registered with your Smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help as both devices appear to be in the right location.
  • Keep in mind that browsers can often reveal a location despite using a VPN, so make sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.
