I am a 47 year old makeup artist – a common mistake is that you look older
A 47-YEAR-OLD makeup artist demonstrated the technique she uses to accentuate her mature skin.
The beauty expert shared her top tips and the most common mistakes that make you look years older.
In her viral videoTikTok user Erica Taylor (@ericataylor2347) demonstrated the method to follow and the most common mistakes to avoid.
First, she started applying the no-go techniques to one side of her face.
Erica advised women with mature skin to never let their base cream or sunscreen dry before moving on to the next step.
She explained that the emphasis should be on giving the skin a fresher, not drier, appearance.
The makeup pro also advised older women to avoid using pore-clogging primers, as they contain “a lot of silicones.”
She also advised against using mattifying makeup unless you have “super oily” skin, as this will dry out your complexion.
She also advised against using a light, matte concealer under the eyes.
Finally, Erica told her older audience not to bake because it only looks smooth from a distance and the wrinkles become visible up close.
She explained that the products she advised against were not bad products, but perhaps they just weren’t suitable for drier, mature skin.
On the other side of her face, Erica demonstrated her favorite techniques for mature skin, placing the areas of skin next to each other.
As a first step, she recommended exfoliating dead skin cells with First Aid Beauty Pads.
Next, she recommended applying a hydrating serum or oil to your entire face.
Erica also used a light moisturizer, which she said “responds beautifully to makeup and adds radiance to the skin.”
She used eye balm to prep the area around her eyes before applying concealer.
As for sunscreen, she advised opting for a mineral variety with a “light tint to even out redness.”
Erica’s favorite products for mature skin
The makeup artist revealed the products she swears by to flatter mature skin.
- Glossier Futuredew Facial Oil-Serum Hybrid, £30, Sephora.
- Extreme Cream Firming and Lifting Moisturiser, £37, Inn Beauty.
- Roc Multi Correxion Revive and Glow Eye Balm, £32.99, Boots.
- Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense SPF 30£32, Drunken Elephant.
- Patrick Ta Foundation.
- Kosas Revealer Super Creamy and Brightening Concealer, £25, Sephora.
Erica also recommended choosing a foundation with nourishing properties and a hydrating formula, rather than a matte one.
She gave the same advice about choosing under-eye concealer.
Erica advises people with more mature skin to apply their powder with a brush instead of a puff. That way it doesn’t ‘bake’ and you just have to ‘lay lightly so the shine shows’.
She showed her audience the difference between the two application methods, joking that the side without it on looks “flat, like Gumby,” while the other side looks so glowy that it “reflects and catches the light.”
“The skin retains a beautiful supple glow and this side is a little gritty and crumbly,” Erica concluded.
Her followers shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments.
“I gotta get that eye balm! You don’t look sideways [like] “I don’t bake, and I don’t bake,” wrote one viewer.
“I’m usually a bit of a grump because I don’t know how to apply makeup,” said someone else.
“Since I started using eye balm it’s been a game changer,” said a third TikTok user.
