Why should you do strength training as you get older?

As we age, it becomes increasingly important to stay physically fit, and strength training plays a vital role in promoting overall health and well-being. One of the most important benefits of strength training for seniors is the preservation and improvement of muscle mass. Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, is a common problem that can lead to decreased mobility, an increased risk of falls, and an overall decline in physical function. Regular strength training helps to counteract these effects by stimulating muscle growth and improving muscle strength, increasing an individual’s ability to perform daily activities with greater ease and independence.

In addition to its impact on muscle mass, strength training also contributes significantly to bone health. Osteoporosis, characterized by weakened and brittle bones, is another common concern among older adults. Weight-bearing exercises, such as weightlifting, promote bone density by putting pressure on the bones, which in turn stimulates the production of new bone tissue. This can help reduce the risk of fractures and other bone-related injuries, promoting a more active, injury-free lifestyle.

Weightlifting also offers significant metabolic benefits, which are especially important because metabolism tends to slow with age. By increasing muscle mass, weightlifting increases your resting metabolic rate, meaning your body burns more calories even at rest. This can aid in weight management and reduce your risk of metabolic conditions like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, weightlifting has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, improve lipid profiles, and reduce inflammation, all of which contribute to a healthier metabolic state.

“I’ve always felt comfortable in my body, but now that I feel fitter and stronger, I probably have even more confidence,” she says.

“I like to encourage other women to be timeless and confident enough to wear what they want. Age is just a number.

“I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence, but I’ve never been in a relationship with a man my own age.

“Maybe it’s because I’m young at heart and a fit, strong and toned body makes everyone feel ageless.”
