Dr. Somji is a hair transplant surgeon and the Chief Medical Officer of the UK-based Aesthetic Clinic Dr.Medispa.

In an interview with The US Sun, he shared the most underrated methods to promote hair growth.

VALUABLE MINUTES

According to Dr. Somji, it’s important to talk to a doctor first to rule out any underlying medical conditions that could compromise hair growth.

“There are some reversible causes of hair loss that you may need blood tests for, such as B12, folic acid, vitamin D and iron deficiencies,” he said.

“Stress, lifestyle, poor diet, poor sleep and elevated cortisol levels can all impact hair growth as well.”

He discovered that a relaxing daily habit can have a huge impact on the health of your hair.

“I think one of the most underrated tips is to massage your scalp daily,” he said.

“This improves circulation and stimulates blood flow and hair follicles.

“The scalp is very good in regenerative capacity, so you can regenerate it yourself by massaging it daily for about 10 minutes, even if you are in the shower while washing your hair or with some oil.”

POWERFUL PRODUCTS

Dr. Somji advises against using products containing chemicals such as sulfates, parabens, silicones and formaldehyde, as these can cause hair loss.

He said permanent hair loss can also be caused by using strong waxes and gels that “starve” the hair and cause traction alopecia.

“In pharmacies you can find 2% minoxidil for women and 5% minoxidil for men. This is a topical solution that stimulates hair growth,” he said.

“There are also hair and scalp care products that can help, such as products containing keratin that can coat the hair.

“Hair tonics can also help against hair loss.”

AMAZING TREATMENTS

According to Dr. Somji, it is possible to improve scalp health and reduce hair loss with treatments such as Keravive and microneedling.

However, it is important to consider the impact of styling habits such as using heat tools, dyeing and bleaching if you want to grow your hair out.

One of the biggest causes of tractional alopecia leading to hair transplants in patients coming to my clinic is the use of hair extensions.

“Using heat when styling hair is extremely damaging,” he said.

“They damage the outer cortex of the hair shaft and the constant pulling can also lead to tractional alopecia.”

He said there are new, low-frequency laser combs that stimulate microcirculation in the scalp and help with various hair conditions.

“One of the biggest causes of tractional alopecia leading to hair transplants in patients coming to my clinic is the use of hair extensions,” he said.

“They add weight to the hair and cause tractional alopecia. If you have the genes for female pattern hair loss, it can accelerate the symptoms.”

FOOD FOR THE THOUGHT

According to Dr. Somji, genetics are responsible for 60-70% of your hair’s appearance.

In addition to genetics, blood tests are critical for identifying nutritional deficiencies that can hamper hair health.

Deficiency can be treated with a good quality multivitamin and dietary changes.

“You need to make sure you’re eating a diet that has all the necessary vitamins and minerals,” he said.

“Vitamin B12, folic acid, iron supplements, vitamin D supplements are essential, as are omega 3 antagonists in your diet.”
