Speaking with Freshthe leading market platform for beauty and wellness, Sami revealed the qualities that can make her clients either good or bad.

She described what creates the dream client: “Arrives on time, has realistic expectations, likes a bit of glitz and loves to chat.

“It makes the whole experience even more fun when we can connect and laugh together!

“Leaving a nice comment or review after an appointment helps build my business and motivates me to continue providing great service.

“By paying the bills without any hassle, they show respect for my time and work, which I really appreciate.

“Receiving a cup of coffee or a small gift is a nice surprise that brightens my day and shows that they care.”

But on the other hand, fans of bad nails who cancel at short notice or simply don’t show up for their appointment risk a probationary period.

Sami said: “Last minute cancellations or no-shows can seriously impact my schedule and income as I have little time to fill the time with another client.

“To arrange this, I ask for a deposit to secure appointments and have a cancellation policy.

“If a client repeatedly cancels or doesn’t show up, I put them on probation. That means they have to pay the full amount before the next appointment, to ensure their commitment.”

A subtle problem left me fighting to stay alive – my nail technician saved my life

Sami indicated that she also finds excessive telephone use particularly annoying.

“While I understand the importance of staying connected, excessive phone use or other distractions can disrupt the progress of the appointment and sometimes affect the curing time of the nails,” she said.

“I think it is important that clients are involved in the process and enjoy the time they are given for it. That way we can get the most out of the session.

“After all, it’s their relaxation time, not phone time.”

She added: “If customers wait too long to choose a colour and keep changing their minds, [is annoying too].

“It can disrupt the progress of the appointment and affect the overall planning.”

To make clients feel more comfortable and relaxed during their appointments, Sami advises, “Clients should come prepared and bring any inspiring photos or ideas they have in mind.

“It’s also helpful if they’re clear about their preferences and let us know any concerns they may have in advance. For example, if they’ve broken a nail or want a lot of nail art, it’s always best to let us know in advance so we can account for the extra time it may take.”

Biggest Beauty Flaws

Tara Ledden, beauty editor of Fabulous, shares the do’s and don’ts of beauty.

“No matter how much time and money you spend on your beauty routine, if you don’t get the basics right, everything else is wasted.

“There aren’t many things you can’t negotiate, but these are the biggest cosmetic mistakes that are sabotaging your regime.”

  • Do not use SPF: Sun damage is the number one cause of premature skin aging, so if you want to keep your skin looking firm and radiant, sunscreen is essential.
  • Use of products whose expiration date has passed: At best, they are ineffective and do not deliver the results they promise, at worst they cause irritation and infection. The shelf life of beauty products varies – for example, mascara is usually good for 3-6 months, while lipstick can last 9-18 months. Check the ‘POA’ symbol on the packaging (it looks like a jar and has a number inside it for how many months it is safe to use after opening. If you can’t remember when you opened your product, throw it out and start over, marking the month and year on the packaging with a permanent marker.
  • Not knowing your undertone: If you use makeup with the wrong undertones, it will never look natural, no matter how much you mix it! An easy trick to figure out if you have cool, warm, or neutral undertones is to check the veins on your wrist – if they look blue, you have cool undertones, if they look green, you have warm, and if they’re a mix, you have neutral.
  • Skip heat protectant: It may seem unnecessary, but just like sun damage to the skin, excessive heat is the most common cause of hair damage. So if you want shiny, healthy hair, or if you want to grow it longer, using a heat protection product is essential.
  • Not washing your face before bed: it’s as simple as this, if you don’t wash your face before you go to bed, whatever has been on your skin during the day will stay there longer, clogging your pores and drying out the surface. Any skincare you apply on top won’t be effective with a layer of dirt underneath, and you’ll probably end up with dirty pillows too – yuck!
