A NAIL technician has revealed the unlikely task that could be causing your hands to age.

Dawn McPhillips, running Heavenly nails in Balloch is shocked at how many people are not following basic skin care practices.

One of the biggest problems is drivers who don’t wear sunscreen to protect themselves from the sun and harmful UV rays.

She said: “Using SPF on your hands is great if you are a driver.

“It helps prevent wrinkles and brown spots.

“Your hands are always on the wheel and visible, but it’s something you only think about when you have to.

“UV lights in lamps aren’t strong enough to be harmful, but you can always wear SPF on your hands if you’re paranoid.

“Lamps use UVA light unlike the sun and tanning beds which use UVB, which causes sunburn and skin cancer.”

Dawn also has other simple tips to keep your hands looking youthful.

She added: “Moisturize. Hydrate. Hydrate. Using a hand cream keeps the skin plump and hydrated, which reduces wrinkles.

“Hand creams that contain vitamin E, hyaluronic acid or shea butter are preferred or a cream that says anti-aging.

“Exfoliating your hands removes dry skin and dead skin cells, leaving skin looking brighter and healthier.

“Wearing gloves when cleaning or gardening is also important to protect yourself from chemicals.

“And regular manicures every two to three weeks prevent breakages and fungal infections.

“It’s also a great stress reliever, as an hour or two of pampering yourself is a great way to unwind.

“Getting your nails done with a treatment will increase your self-confidence, which will make you feel more put together.”
