I am a single mother and I will make my children pay rent, they are not lazy if I look after them
A SINGLE mother says she would make her children pay rent even if they were on benefits, because today’s young people don’t understand responsibility.
Lynne Cavanagh, 43, shared her opinion on TikTok after becoming fed up with parents pampering their adult children.
She admitted that she was part of the problem, because she also spoils her three children and knows that they are not as mature as she was at their age.
Lynne said, “When I was 21, I got married.
“When I was 25, I was married, had two kids, a mortgage for a long time, a job. My husband had a job, we had a sense of responsibility and life skills.
“And from a very young age I had to pay digging fees. And even when I had a low wage, I still had to pay digging fees.
“My mother made me donate money to grants, to credit unions, and I had to learn how to manage money. I hated that at the time because I was always broke. But it teaches you values and responsibility.
“I will always make my children pay money, I don’t even care if they are on universal credit or whatever, they will still pay because if they want money they are the boss and they go to work themselves.
“I think adults are just kids these days. Like I said, at 21 I had full responsibility.
“My 21 year old kids are only interested in what they wear on the weekend.
“I think I’m part of the problem and it has to stop. I think it’s time we get tough and show the kids what life is.”
And the people who responded in the comments completely agreed with Lynn’s assessment.
Someone said, “I took my daughter’s money from the grave, saved it up, and when she bought her house, she got it to build a new kitchen. I believe in life you have to pay bills.”
Another wrote: “I am 100 percent guilty of this myself. My dad had money but I had to work at the ice cream truck from the age of 14 to earn money and get the stuff I wanted when I was younger.”
A third follower added: “I totally agree with you.
“I started working when I was 15 and had two jobs. My first salary was less than £5.
“Yes, they have to pay the costs themselves.”
