I am a vet, 5 dogs I would never want, including one that will cost a lot of money in bills

A veterinarian with years of experience treating all kinds of animals has determined which dog breeds are the worst to own.

Alex from the UK took to social media to warn about the risks of certain dogs, saying he would never want to own one himself.

In the clip he said, “Here are five dog breeds I wouldn’t want to own as a vet.

“Remember that this is ultimately my own opinion. I have based this on the many dogs with health problems that I have seen in my daily work. Furthermore, I generally see these breeds more often than others.”

First on his list was the Chinese dog breed: the Shar Pei.

The vet said the dog’s skin, which is known for its cute wrinkles, also causes many health problems.

He said: “They can lead to serious skin infections because bacteria get trapped between the folds and fester there.

“They are also more prone to ear infections because of their narrow ear canals.”

In addition, they often require a procedure similar to a facelift to prevent their eyelids from rolling forward.

Flat-faced dogs, such as French bulldogs, were also on Alex’s banned list, as they were notorious for health problems that left owners spending thousands of dollars in veterinary bills.

Their flat faces often cause breathing problems, overheating and reflux, and they also suffer from skin infections and eye problems.

“If a dog needs multiple surgeries to live a normal life, then those surgeries probably shouldn’t exist,” the veterinarian said.

German Shepherds are also on the list because they require a lot of stimulation, which many owners can’t provide. This makes these dogs anxious and reactive.

The vet said he also didn’t want to keep the Great Dane because they are prone to a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy.

He added: “They often have a shorter lifespan due to their large size, on average they live about 7 to 8 years.

“I would just find it really hard to say goodbye after such a short time.”

Most Popular Dog Breeds in the UK

Dog experts Tug-E-Nuff conducted a survey in the UK to find out their favourite dog breeds. Here are the top ten.

  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. Border Collie
  3. English Cocker Spaniel
  4. Cockapoo
  5. Golden Retriever
  6. German Shepherd Dog
  7. Staffordshire Bull Terrier
  8. English Cocker Spaniel
  9. Jack Russel Terrier
  10. Labradoodle

Finally, Alex revealed that he would never own the dachshund.

“Although they often have attractive personalities, their body shape makes them more susceptible to many of these health problems. I just find it heartbreaking to see them go through all of this,” he said.

The clip has gone viral on his TikTok account @alex_thevet with over 119,000 views and 4,000 likes.

People were quick to share their thoughts in the comments.

Someone wrote: “I wish people would learn more about these breeds!!”

Another noted, “Too many people buy dogs based on looks, and don’t research their needs, combined with a lack of mental and physical exercise. People need to research their breed BEFORE they get them!”

“I totally agree, it’s so sad how many French bulldogs I see at work with serious health problems,” wrote a third.

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “I totally agree.”

“Sad but true,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “The Sharpei, every vet’s least favorite dog.”
