I am really angry about the inappropriate dress my mother, 50, chose for my wedding
A bride-to-be shared her frustration over the dress her mother chose for her special day.
She was very disappointed with the color she wanted to wear to her wedding, it was almost as bad as white.
Reddit user XanCai initially liked her mother’s dress, until she saw it in person and decided it wasn’t age-appropriate.
She explained it in a after that she is in her fifties and that “the cut of the dress looks more like a 25-year-old.”
DRESS DETAILS
The fitted green dress shows off her shoulders, features a modest halter neckline that accentuates her bust and a side slit.
“If shoulders are an issue in church, ask her to wear a Pashmina around her shoulders during the ceremony. Problem solved,” another Redditor advised.

XanCai admitted she was “really unhappy with it” and knew it would make her “irrationally angry” if she saw her wearing it on her special day.
If someone else chose to wear such a style, she would have them sit in the “dark corners of the ballroom.” With her mother, however, she can’t do that.
The bride said she tried to match her looks, but her mother wouldn’t budge, thinking it was only for older women.
“She’s literally over 50 and having her midlife crisis at my wedding. It’s insane,” she added.
“It’s definitely not as horrible as the other one she picked, but I still hate it.”
Xancai told her that the photographer would not take any pictures of her at all if she wore the dress.
Her mother replied that she would bring her own photographer, and others agreed with her.
“A 50-year-old woman who wants to look and feel sexy is not having a midlife crisis. Threatening to ban the photographer from taking her picture is manipulative and controlling,” one Redditor wrote.
The original poster said she didn’t understand why her mother was being “so difficult” about the situation.
“I actually like this answer. She’s not difficult. Let’s just say someone else is,” said another Reddit user.
SIMPLE SOLUTION
As consolation, her mother-in-law offered to return her original dress and wear a similar green dress so both parents could match in the photo.
“I spoke to my mother and I apologized for my anger and for all the comments I made when I was angry. I told her I changed my mind and she should just wear the dress,” she said.
Her mother’s reaction was unexpected.
She started “completely” laugh” and said she didn’t want to wear the dress anymore after she found a better dress at Nordstrom.
“I felt like she was using this dress to get on my nerves, and it worked. I acted like a fool,” XanCai said.
REDDIT REACTIONS
Several Redditors disagreed with the bride and voiced their opinions.
“Just because she’s 50 doesn’t mean she has to dress like a matron and cover everything from her neck to her ankles. That dress is perfectly acceptable for a wedding and her age. She’s not trying,” one person said.
“From your description I would have expected a micro skirt and/or a neckline that reached her belly button, but that dress you posted looks perfectly stylish for a woman her age. She’s in her 50s, not her 90s,” wrote another.
“I would love for my mom or mother-in-law (both in their mid-60s) to wear this dress to my wedding. It’s gorgeous and age appropriate! Moms deserve to feel fashionable too,” one woman added.
