I am still a virgin at 33.. my man must be ‘established in every way’
At 33, Lauren Harkins has never been on a date or been intimate with anyone, but she claims she’s happy when she’s alone.
While her friends were experiencing their first relationships and crushes, Lauren found herself losing interest, finding them and the dating scene “childish” and “too complicated.”
Lauren, originally from Portland, Maine, came to the conclusion that romance wasn’t for her. She admitted that she’d never felt the need to prioritize a romantic relationship and had never had sex because of it.
“I’m a virgin, but I’m not traditional. Usually it’s one or the other, but I’m just really happy with myself,” the 33-year-old said.
“The twenties are such a confusing time. Everyone has to figure out their career and sort out all sorts of things. That just wasn’t what I wanted to do.”
After her father, William Stacey, passed away in 2006, Lauren said the unfortunate event changed her priorities in romantic relationships.
The pretty blonde is an only child and claims she is happy being alone, believing that a partner is “not necessary” to enjoy a fulfilling life.
“When I looked around, I didn’t see anyone I was friends with, or in a relationship with, or whose life I wanted to emulate. I was fine with just doing my own thing,” she explained.
Lauren continued, “I’ve never looked to others as a benchmark for what my life is going to be. Instead, I’ve chosen to follow my own intuition about what’s best for me at any given time.”
Lauren is now almost 30 and says she is finally open to a relationship. But the future Romeo will have to meet certain requirements.
While the woman said it’s important to have a connection with someone, Lauren also didn’t want to live with just anyone.
“I would like to be someone who is much more established than me. I would just like to be someone who is better than me in every way!”
Lauren, who embraces new things and is currently travelling the world after working in the prison system for two years, said she didn’t want a “traditional lifestyle”.
“I love adventures and trying new things,” said Lauren, who lives primarily off her late father’s trust fund.
The travel-loving woman has traveled to Morocco, Peru, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, France, Germany and the Netherlands and regularly shares her adventures on social media.
Although those closest to her never pressured her to date, Lauren admits her friends and family struggle to understand why she doesn’t want to have sex.
Celebrities Who Waited Until Marriage To Have Sex
Celebrities prefer to keep the details of their sex lives private, but when it comes to their choice to wait until marriage, some stars are willing to open up.
Jessica Simpson – Before marrying Nick Lachey, Jessica was very open about her decision to remain a virgin. She said she was nervous to broach the subject with Nick for the first time, but he “remained patient” until they tied the knot in 2002.
Justin and Hailey Bieber – Justin may have been with other people before marrying his wife Hailey, but when they reconnected in 2019, he had already been in self-imposed celibacy for over a year. Together, the couple decided to continue avoiding sex until they were married.
Adriana Lima – Victoria’s Secret model Adriana’s Catholic faith influenced her decision to save herself for marriage. She explained that potential suitors had to respect her decision — and if they weren’t willing to wait, then they weren’t right for her.
Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel – When Miranda started dating Snapchat founder Evan, the couple decided to wait until marriage to have sex because of Evan’s traditional beliefs. In an interview, Miranda was asked about the possibility of having children before their wedding and she said it wouldn’t be possible: “Not until we’re married. My partner is very traditional. We can’t… I mean, we’re just waiting…,” she told The Times.
Kevin Jonas – All of the Jonas brothers wore purity rings for much of their adolescence, in part due to their religious upbringings. While Nick and Joe eventually took off their rings, Kevin kept it off until he tied the knot with his wife Danielle in 2009.
The 33-year-old stressed that she is “not a member of any religion at all,” but because she “doesn’t cheat and lives a super modern feminist lifestyle, that camp doesn’t know what to do with her either,” Lauren explained.
“Too traditional for the feminists, but not traditional enough for the traditional people,” Lauren says. “She’s on a mission to break that barrier.”
When it comes to finding her future partner, Lauren has high standards and encourages others to do the same.
The 33-year-old bachelor is a late bloomer and said it’s “important to destigmatize this lifestyle” and that her virginity doesn’t mean there’s “anything wrong” with her.
