Q) My son just received his first professional football contract.

As his mother, I have decided to represent him myself to avoid agent fees and poor representation, and I want to protect as much of his assets as possible.

However, I understand that most clubs prefer to do business with an agent and that as a woman in football you are sometimes not taken seriously.

How can I overcome these challenges, and do you have any advice on how to negotiate terms in a boardroom full of men?

A) Congratulations to your son for this incredible achievement!

As a mother, it’s normal to want the best for your child, so I think it’s great that you’re taking the initiative to represent him.

If you are in England, you must first register with the Football Association as an intermediary.

You will undergo a “test of good character and reputation” as well as a criminal record check.

Then familiarize yourself with the industry in detail. Understanding the standard terms, bonuses and conditions will not only increase your knowledge, but also show the people you do business with that you are well informed.

Remember, networking is powerful.

Talk to club staff, coaches and even other agents.

The more you connect with key people in the industry, the more they will see you as a valuable partner in your son’s career.

When negotiating terms, it is important to radiate confidence and professionalism.

Dress appropriately for the occasion, prepare a clear agenda in advance and send it around, and – very important – come to the meeting well prepared.

Communicate assertively but calmly and make it clear that your primary goal is to reach the best agreement for your son.

You got this – good luck!
