The caravan looks particularly cosy inside, with a chequered sofa that converts into a fold-out bed and a small desk where she works from home.

It is cutely decorated with plants and flowers and there are Christmas lights hanging on the walls.

There’s even an outside table and chairs so Millie can enjoy her morning cup of coffee in the sunshine.

Living in a caravan in your parents’ garden is a great way to save money for a house while still remaining independent.

As the cost of living continues to rise, more adults are finding it difficult to afford a home and are choosing to stay in their family home longer.

The 2021 census found that more than half of people aged 23 and under still live with their parents.

The average price of a house in the UK was £285,000 in March 2023. This has now risen to a whopping £735,254. For many, this is unaffordable.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tiny Homes

The tiny house movement started in the United States and later became popular in the United Kingdom as well.

What is a tiny house?

Tiny houses are small, fully-equipped living spaces designed to facilitate a more sustainable, off-grid lifestyle. Though they vary in size and shape, tiny houses are typically between 150 and 500 square feet, made of sustainable materials, and are easier—and less expensive—to maintain than traditional brick and mortar homes.

Are tiny houses legal in the UK?

As long as the tiny house is no larger than 19.8m x 6.7m, it is defined as a caravan in UK law. Therefore, tiny houses are classed as legal additional dwelling accommodation.

Can you get a mortgage for a tiny house?

The small size and relatively low cost of tiny homes means that they are generally not eligible for a mortgage. However, there are plenty of options for getting a loan to finance your dreams of the perfect, portable home.

Research by the Resolution Foundation also shows that the average deposit for a first-time home buyer has tripled: from 5 percent of the house price in 1989 to 15 percent in 2019.

This means that buyers have to save for much longer and spend a larger percentage of their income to purchase a home.

Recent research by property website Zoopla found that 42 percent of adults under 40 who do not yet own a home have given up their current home because of the astronomical costs associated with buying a house.
