James Milner feared that he would never run again after nerve damage during surgery.

The first England International missed the lion’s share of the 2024/25 season for Brighton after surgery after a knee injury last August.

However, a nerve was damaged during his knee -weder structure and unable to lift him his feet or toes.

The 39-year-old remembered: “I had a contact injury during the training before the Arsenal game on my knee.

“It was stable and we tried it and my hamstring reacted.

“I had a knee operation and knee construction, which was fine and I would have been back in early December.

“But a nerve was damaged in the operation. After the operation I couldn’t lift my foot or toes.

“The first time I saw a flicker of life was December 31.

Milner’s way to recovery has been long and difficult to say the least.

He continued: “It has been a long, tough road. The medical staff has been incredible, [club physio] Sean Duggan has been absolutely incredible.

“There was a chance that I might not have come back at all. I didn’t know if I could walk normally again, let alone play football.

‘But luckily the hard work has paid off. And to go onto the field today [Sunday] With the boys and see them turning it around in the second half and being part of it was special.

“I’ve been in the grass for a few months now, but I just have to be careful with contact.

“I just don’t have time anymore. When it was season next Week, I think I would have been fit from now on.

“It is not age -related, it is only one chance in to many thousands.

“It was just a bit of bad luck after the season started well and feeling good.”

Milner returned to action on the last day of the season last weekend, in which Brighton was thrown back to a 4-1 win Europa League Winners Tottenham.

And the veteran hopes to earn a new contract with the Amex, so he will play top flight football In the ripe age of 40.

He said: “I started the season well, I now look at my fitness and I feel good.

I didn’t know if I could walk normally again, let alone play football. “
