Reddit user Dausenwillis shared the approach in a series of comments on the social media platform.

He explained that he had made his children an offer they couldn’t refuse.

“I offered my kids $100 to use the same backpack from kindergarten through eighth grade,” he said.

He went one step further in making the offer even harder for the children to say no.

“If they continue using the same package through grade 12, I will give them $1,000,” he added.

“I have three children and only bought three backpacks.

“The oldest got both payments. The middle child got the first. The youngest has a year to go before the first payment.”

He said he came up with the idea because he doesn’t want to pay for things he finds unnecessary.

His 11th grader had been using the same backpack since kindergarten, while his 24-year-old son kept his kindergarten backpack.

The deal wasn’t just about play money, but about money they could use for their future.

Fantastic back-to-school deals you can’t miss!

“I’m basically paying $300 for 3 backpacks because the $1,000 I have to spend on tuition, which I’m already contributing to,” he said.

“My children are now very aware of what they buy and whether it will last.”

He added that the deal would allow his children to keep other belongings, such as their clothes, for longer.

The sustainable backpacks came from one specific store.

“I bought LL Bean backpacks and they are damn durable,” he revealed.

The LLBean Deluxe Book Pack costs $54.95.

Several Redditors responded by sharing their opinions and asking questions.

“What happens if it breaks and it’s not the child’s fault?” someone asked.

“It’s not their fault, as long as I can replace him with the same one,” the father replied.

“Yes, it will make them actively look after their possessions,” said another. “Quite a lesson.”
