I hit the renovation jackpot when we saw what was under the old carpet in our house
RENOVATING your home can be hard work, but it can also lead to you discovering treasures in your home that you didn’t know you had.
This was certainly true for a couple who discovered a beautiful detail in their home when they removed the carpet in the hall.
On their @abbies.home.diy In their report, they said they wanted to get rid of the old gray carpet when they moved in.
They said: “Today we hit the jackpot with our home renovation.
“Our hallway suffered from damp coming in through the door… under the carpet and rotting laminate we found the most fantastic floor covering.”
Abbie said the hall had beautiful tiles that looked like they came from the Victorian era.
She added: “If these are original Victorian tiles then they have been here since 1990.
“Now we have to figure out how to restore them to their original beauty.
“They are covered in glue and paint and damaged in a few places, but we are so happy to be able to clean them up and make them look nice again.”
Her video has been liked over 287,000 times and people were very impressed with the discovery.
One said, “Beautiful! I found woodworm under mine.”
Abbie replied, “This is our fear for the rest of the house!!”
A second person wrote: “Why anyone would discuss this is beyond me.”
However, a third commented: “Why people like the tiles, I’ll never know!”
An expert of Tile Doctor explained how he manages to restore Victorian tiles to their former glory.
He wrote: “To get all the dirt out of the pores of the tiles, I first applied a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Remove and Go and after leaving it for ten minutes, scrubbed it in with a black pad.
“I’ve also got a steam cleanser during this process to remove dirt from the pores.
“Then I continued with the loose tiles, where the old adhesive had to be removed from the tile and the substrate.
“The original tiles were then cleaned by hand, after which new quick-drying adhesive was applied to re-attach them to the floor.”
He then rinses the lines with acid to remove old grout residue.
The professional concluded: “The floor was then rinsed again and the dirt was sucked up with a water vacuum cleaner, after which the floor was allowed to dry overnight.”
Four Cheap Home Renovation Tricks
YOU don’t have to spend a ton of money to give a room a new look. Here are five other home renovation tricks you can try.
Kitchen cabinets
One way to give your kitchen a complete transformation for less is to change the look of your kitchen cabinets. There are many different vinyl sidings to choose from, and it’s a quick and easy way to update your home.
Handles
Another thing you can try without spending a lot of money is to replace the handles. You can buy relatively cheap handles at hardware stores or even thrift stores. Adding new handles to your kitchen cabinets or doors in your home can be very effective.
Leftovers
Most of us have old, half-used cans of paint sitting around in the garage, but they’re often forgotten about. However, there could be enough in the can to paint an accent wall in another room, and you don’t have to spend a dime.
Free stuff
It’s worth checking your local Facebook Marketplace or Freecycle to see what other people are getting rid of. As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. And if someone is planning to redecorate a room, they might want to get rid of a sofa or coffee table that could be used to give a lounge a new look.
