The carpets smelled, the floorboards were falling apart and the walls were in desperate need of repair and a new coat of paint.

With her husband disabled and her children ranging in age from just a few months to seven years old, Rebekah was overwhelmed by the amount of work that needed to be done.

After realizing the magnitude of the task, she tearfully decided to take matters into her own hands and tackle the job herself.

But as many DIYers can tell you, things didn’t go quite as planned, so she shared a video on her TikTok page @justbeckii warns her followers not to make the same mistakes she did.

“I messed up and wasted £100 on paint,” Rebekah admits.

“Today I learn not one, but two life lessons.

“The first is that jumping right into a DIY project isn’t always the best approach, and lesson two is that paint tester pots are there for a reason.”

She continues, “I spent 45 minutes choosing the paint colors for this room.

“But as an impulsive person, I didn’t want to buy a tester pot. I was so sure of myself.

‘I thought: ‘Take good care of the pennies, and the pounds will take care of themselves.’ The ‘girl math’ made sense at the time.”

But it turned out that the “girl math” wasn’t as good as she had hoped.

She says, “Now I’m trying to convince myself that I haven’t completely messed up, but honestly my face says it all: I hate the color.”

Looking back, she says, “$5 worth of test pots doesn’t seem that bad right now.”

Hoping that things would magically improve, Rebekah decided to continue painting, confident that the color would change.

She says, “I thought it would look different once it was on the wall. But it didn’t. At that point I decided to just call it a ‘future issue’.”

However, Rebekah decided to throw a different color into the mix.

She says, “I convinced myself that the neutral color wasn’t right for the walls. But that didn’t help either.”

Now Rebekah is wondering, “So, what do I do now? Do I continue with this green and hope for the best? Maybe I can mix in some white to lighten it?”

Rules for transforming your council house

According to Governmentthe types of improvements you can make to your council property depend on the type of lease you have.

First-time renters are usually limited to minor improvements, such as redecorating the inside.

If you are a secure tenant, you have the right to make improvements to your property. These include:

  • installing a new bathroom or kitchen
  • building an extension
  • installing a garden shed or greenhouse
  • installing a new gas fireplace or fireplace
  • cavity wall insulation
  • redecorating the exterior of a house
  • installing an antenna or satellite dish

You may need written permission from your municipality for your work. Contact your municipality if you’re not sure.

Previously, Rebekah exclusively revealed to Fabulous that she was “devastated” when she first moved into her home.

She said: “It’s safe to say we were devastated, especially as our children had to live in a property that we didn’t think was safe for them.

“My husband is on disability after being medically discharged from the military due to a back injury, and at the same time this was all happening; he had just been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

“This was also a struggle because neither of us was in a state where we could do much about it at the time.

“I also had a caesarean section, which meant I had to recover for several weeks while caring for my children and husband.”
