In her viral videoTikTok user Talia (@taliaoutten) gave her viewers a quick glimpse into the living space of her temporary residence.

She told her audience that she was “homeless and had two babies.”

Talia explained that they were staying in a hotel room with no kitchen facilities.

She said she was “eternally grateful” to the council for their help, but also said the living conditions were not feasible for her family.

Talia said her children are one and three years old and she needed a kitchen to make ends meet.

“No stove, microwave, or refrigerator for the babies’ milk,” the TikToker explained.

She pointed the camera at the temporary kitchen setup she had created on the desk in the hotel room.

Talia used the kettle in the room to cook noodles and other easy-to-prepare meals.

However, she indicated that she needed better facilities to care for her children.

She said the council told her she could not stay in the room for more than eight months because of her young children.

Mother’s Housing Struggle: Charmaine’s Story

According to Talia, the family “has no idea what’s going to happen next.”

She added that she is just happy now that her children are safe.

“I remain positive knowing that our journey will end wonderfully and that I will create the best home for them,” she said.

Talia went to even more trouble to make the room feel like home for her young children.

She added decorations and other homely touches throughout, such as books and toys.

How can I get social housing?

To apply for social housing, you must complete an application form and submit it to your municipality.

To find your municipality, you can simply use the municipality finder on the government website.

Once you have access to your municipality’s website, you will find guidelines there for completing your application.

After you register, you will likely be placed on a waiting list.

Please note that even if you are placed on the waiting list, this does not guarantee an offer of social housing.

Your local authority can also advise you on how to continue living in your current home and resolve any issues, such as problems with a private landlord or mortgage.

You are eligible for application for social housing if you are a British citizen living in the UK, provided you have not recently lived abroad.

Each municipality has its own local rules about who is eligible to be placed on the housing list for its area, but these rules are based on a system of ‘points’ or ‘bands’.

For example, you will probably be the first to be offered a home if you:

  • are homeless
  • living in cramped conditions
  • have a medical condition that is aggravated by your current home
  • trying to escape domestic violence

Once you are high enough on the municipality’s waiting list, you will be contacted as soon as a home becomes available.

In some municipalities you can submit an application from the age of 18, in other municipalities you can submit an application from the age of 16.

EU workers and their families and refugees may also be eligible.

You will be allocated social housing through a points system. Depending on your housing needs, you may be given low priority.

Once you are high enough on the waiting list, the municipality will contact you about available housing.

There is no limit to how long you will be on the waiting list.

Her followers shared their thoughts about the living situation in the comments.

“Well done!! I look forward to following your journey,” wrote one viewer.

Other TikTok users shared that they could relate to Talia’s journey.

“I’m also in the hotel, I don’t know what’s going to happen either. I’m expecting to give birth next month,” said someone else.

“I’ve been there honey, stayed in a B&B, then a temporary apartment and now in my forever home. It’s tough but worth it, you’ll get there,” a third follower commented.
