I made a ‘gold dust’ discovery under the doormat in my first home
A COUPLE have revealed they made a ‘golden’ find under the doormat of their first home – which even their estate agent didn’t know about.
Josh and Liv viewed their new home several times before purchasing it, but they still didn’t know about the building’s big secret.
Excited to share their discovery, the couple shared a video on their YouTube channel @joshandlivwhich they often use to provide insight into their home renovation journey.
“People always say to expect the unexpected, and you know they’re right,” Josh said.
Then he pulled up the mat next to the front door, revealing a square plank of wood.
Under the plank was a large hole that led to a huge cellar that ran the entire width of the house.

“We can’t believe our agent didn’t even know we had a basement, or even that the sellers didn’t think to tell us about this huge space underneath our house“, said Josh.
“We can’t even express how shocked we were when we discovered that there was an entire house underneath us.”
The couple’s basement is extremely dirty and dusty, and Josh says the plumbing and electrical aren’t in the best of shape.
However, he added that they can be replaced quite easily.
Josh and Liv are eager to renovate their new basement and the rest of their home, but they haven’t said what they’re going to do with it yet.
They could turn it into a gym, or maybe even rent it out as Airbnb.
The couple’s video has likely left many people with their mouths open, as it has already been viewed more than 2.3 million times on the video platform.
YouTube users enthusiastically shared their opinions in the comments of the video, but many also warned the couple.
The basement has many large holes in the walls, through which previous tenants have punched holes.
Home Improvements That Add the Most Value to a Home
The best renovation to add value depends entirely on your home, the local market and your potential buyers.
Zoopla shared a list of improvements that will instantly increase the value of your home.
- Loft conversion – 15% increase
- Off street parking – adds £50,000 to the property price
- New kitchen – 15% increase
- Garage conversion – 15% increase
- Basement or basement conversion – 10-15% increase
- Open living space – increase of 3-5%
- New bathroom – increase of 3-5%
Someone commented on this: “Construction worker, sorry to break it to you, but those walls are not sturdy at all and not fit for purpose.
“It looks like those ‘walls’ didn’t always have ‘doors’ and someone broke them down.”
However, he added: “The good news is that with an investment, a little time and sweat, and of course a staircase, you can increase more than 50% of the price of the house!”
Another person commented: “[The estate agents] I didn’t tell you because that crawl space/basement is messed up.
“I would definitely have an inspection/investigation done.
“It looks like someone has broken open the walls. If the house is supported by those walls, you have a big problem.”
A third person added: “I don’t think I would have much confidence that the house is intact until it has been thoroughly inspected.
All that brick looks like it could collapse at any moment.”
