I make extra Christmas money as an Evri courier – I HATE this part of it
AN enterprising mum has shared how she is making some extra Christmas money on TikTok.
The post with five slides by the user @Shannonnunn3 showed her second day as a courier for delivery company Evri.
In the first slide, Shannon had taken a smiley selfie ahead of her second day of work.
On the second slide, she revealed the mountain of packages she had to load into her Kia.
Somehow, by the third time, she had managed to stuff the packages into her trunk.
After getting packed and ready to hit the road, Shannon revealed what she HATES about the job: the loud hi-vis jacket she has to wear.
“I want to burn the hi-vis,” she cheekily captioned the slide.
At the end of the post, Shannon reveals how many packages she has delivered: “55 packages done, she’s doing well”
She later confirmed in the comments that she had only worked two hours that day.
Viewers quickly flooded her with questions.
One person asked: “Is the pay worth it? And are you self-employed or employed by Evri? Seriously considering it.”
Shannon responded, “As a self-employed person, you can cancel whenever you want without being tied to anything.”
Another person asked: “How was the training? I have mine next week.”
Shannon warned that the training is not very thorough: “You arrive at the depot, they show you how to use the app and then you deliver packages hahaha”
Another person chimed in to agree: “Literally, they give you packages and say ‘please'”
And another user wanted to know how the feature’s hours would fit into their lives: “What time do you have to pick up the parcels?”
Shannon told them, “Whatever time you want.
“I do it two days a week around my little girls’ school hours because I already have another job.”
So how do you become a self-employed Evri courier?
The Evri website states that you need three things to register:
- An iOS or Android smartphone
- Proof of the right to be self-employed in the United Kingdom
- Access to a car or van with driver’s license and insurance
You can register via the Evri website, here.
Do I have to pay tax on my additional income?
MANY people who feel strapped for cash increase their bank balance with a little extra.
The good news is that there are plenty of easy ways to make some extra income, but you have to know the rules.
If you are employed, the company you work for takes the tax on your earnings and pays HMRC, so you don’t have to.
But anyone who makes extra money, for example by selling things online or walking dogs, may have to do it themselves.
Stephen Moor, head of employment at law firm Ashfords, said: “Caution should be exercised if you earn extra income as it is likely to be taxable.
“The sideline activity may be treated as taxable trade income, which may include providing services or selling products.”
Through the trade deduction you can earn a gross income of up to € 1,000 per year tax-free, but you usually have to pay tax on this.
Stephen added: “You should register for a self-assessment with HMRC to make sure you pay the correct amount of tax.
“The applicable tax brackets and the amount of tax you must pay depend on your income.”
If you fail to file a tax return, you could later receive a surprise bill from HMRC asking you to pay the tax you owe – plus additional costs on top of that.
