I quit my cleaning job and bought an old tool shed to convert into a tiny house
A WOMAN shared how she bought an old tool shed and converted it into her dream home.
Jessica decorated her tiny home with thrift store items and even used an old flower pot as a makeshift sink.
She shared that she has wanted to build a tiny house for years and that she loves being able to take her micro home with her when she travels around the country.
The mother of one quit her job as a cleaner in 2021 after her daughter left home and decided it was the perfect time to pursue her dream.
Jessica said she found the transition from her 1,700-square-foot, two-story home to a 70-square-foot house surprisingly easy.
“I always hated having so much space in a house that I never used,” she told the Tiny House Tours YouTube channel.

“You only need so much space in a house, and that’s really just your bed and maybe your couch,” she said.
“My daughter left home, so I was all alone in this big old house. I thought it was time to make my dreams come true.”
Jessica says she’s actually never inside, except when she’s cooking or sleeping, so she doesn’t worry about the lack of space.
The tiny home is completely off-grid, with appliances like her refrigerator powered by a solar panel Jessica mounted to the roof of the shed.
To keep her home from feeling cramped and stuffy, Jessica’s shed has large windows on both sides.
“These large, picturesque windows were the deciding factor for me to buy this shed,” she said.
“I thought this would be a great little house, and what a great view you would have from there.”
To make the most of her space, Jessica has a couch that she can relax on during the day and convert into a double bed at night. It takes up almost the entire space in the barn.
She also has a composting toilet, a fire pit and even a secret garden.
In the garden she grows beans, tomatoes and carrots, which allows her to become self-reliant.
Frequently Asked Questions about Tiny Homes
The tiny house movement started in the United States and later became popular in the United Kingdom as well.
What is a tiny house?
Tiny houses are small, fully-equipped living spaces designed to facilitate a more sustainable, off-grid lifestyle. Though they vary in size and shape, tiny houses are typically between 150 and 500 square feet, made of sustainable materials, and are easier—and less expensive—to maintain than traditional brick and mortar homes.
Are tiny houses legal in the UK?
As long as the tiny house is no larger than 19.8m x 6.7m, it is defined as a caravan in UK law. Therefore, tiny houses are classed as legal additional dwelling accommodation.
Can you get a mortgage for a tiny house?
The small size and relatively low cost of tiny homes means that they are generally not eligible for a mortgage. However, there are plenty of options for getting a loan to finance your dreams of the perfect, portable home.
Jessica’s tiny house even has an outdoor shower, so she can look at the stars while she washes up.
She added that she always feels safe in her shed as it even has its own surveillance system, which sends alerts straight to her home.
“Right now I’m just living the best life of my life,” she said.
“I’m not doing much else at the moment other than working on this little house and getting it finished.”
Jessica shared that once she finishes working on her tiny house, she’s going to turn it into an AirBnb and live in a van she converted.
