Yvey Valcinthe founder of Yvey salonhas collaborated with several celebrities during global fashion events, most notably in Paris, France, Milan, Italy and New York Fashion Week, or NYFW.

He admitted it’s difficult to get a “complete picture” of the famous models he’s worked with, but two have made an impression on him.

He said Gigi Hadid was “super cool” and “super laid back,” which he thought was “lovely.” I remember her being super laid back, which was lovely.

Cara Delevingne was a little more shy when he hung out with her.

He said she “didn’t say much” the day he worked with her.

“But that doesn’t say anything about who she is,” he added.

BUDGET BEAUTY LINE

Valcin described his texture as “hair with an attitude” that “can intimidate a stylist,” so he’s very particular about what he puts on it.

In terms of growth, he recommended one brand in particular.

“Kreyòl Essence is a cost-effective product line that can solve hair growth problems,” he said.

The black-owned company “has pretty much everything you need to get started” growing out your locks.

His favorite product from the line is the Rosemary Peppermint Haitian Black Castor Oil$22.

A hydrating styling cream is usually his go-to product for taming frizzy hair with coarse or medium texture.

It is the “first product that every hair type needs as a base.”

“Curly and wavy hair naturally require more hydrating products to rehydrate,” he explains.

“The benefits of a moisturizer are essential for hair hydration and strength.”

LOCKING LESSONS

Valcin added that it can be “damaging” if a stylist doesn’t know the relationship between hair types and products, as some products can cause thinning hair.

“In addition to genetic hair loss, using bad products is a major factor in hair loss,” he said.

Other causes include frequent swimming, frequent hat wearing, excessive environmental exposure and constant chemical treatments, he added.

“Luckily, there are many products on the market that can help strengthen thin hair,” he said.

Texturizing powders and mousse are good for sparse spots, and temporary color sprays can make your hair look fuller.

When it comes to the hair products he uses, he has a ‘simple’ philosophy.

“First, what are your hair needs? Second, how do you want it to look? Third, how do you want your hair to look?” he asked.

QUICK SOLUTIONS

Valcin also shared quick tips for different hair lengths.

“If you’re looking for a quick fix, it’s important to know which products will work for you,” he said.

For a one- to two-day hairstyle, he recommended using mousse on dry hair “to create texture for a messy ponytail.

“Another quick fix that is often overlooked are hair accessories such as scarves, turbans and decorative claw clips. These are the fastest way to create a chic style,” he added.

If you have longer hair and don’t have time to use heat, he suggested first dividing your hair into four equal sections.

Then, twist each section in half or flat, creating four large braids. Let them sit for five minutes.

When you take them out, you get “nice unstructured waves”.

Depending on the texture or density of your hair, you may need to mist your hair with a spray bottle and then mix in some mousse and a few drops of oil while scrunching your hair, Valcin says.

“This will help restructure the hair for an effortlessly chic look,” he explained.

For an easy fix using hot tools, Valcin recommended “a quick version of a blowout.”

Divide your hair into four large sections, create four large curls with the curling iron of your choice, twist your hair back to loosen the sections, and finally create your parting.

CRAZY NYFW ENCOUNTERS

Valcin admitted that there is “always something crazy” happening at major fashion shows like New York Fashion Week.

When Valcin worked with Bumble and Bumble for the NYFW opening ceremony in 2017, he explained that the looks the stylists had to create were completely different than the looks the designers wanted.

By the time we discovered this, time was almost up. It was a bit of a disaster to redo everything in such a short time, but we did our best and the designers were happy with the result,” he said.

Yvey has also been a hairstylist for actress and producer Sheila Houlahan.
