I tape my mouth shut every night and wear a chin strap – I want to freeze aging at 27
A WOMAN sleeps with a jaw brace, eye patches and tape over her mouth so she can ‘age gracefully’.
Mayte Myers, 27, decided to improve her skin care and nighttime routine because she felt the need to achieve “consistent results” to reduce her “deep crow’s feet” without resorting to cosmetic surgery.
She applies her skin care products and puts on eye patches, a hairnet, a jaw band and mouth tape before going to bed.
Mayte says internet trolls say, “Who would want to sleep with her when she looks like this?” but she feels like the routine makes her skin feel fresher.
Mayte, a content creator from Dallas, Texas, US, said: “People have reacted and blamed me for having high beauty standards, because I have imposed the demands that are placed on me to meet those standards.”
“People have also said that I do it for the male gaze, and others have said, ‘But who would want to sleep with her when she looks like that?’”
“My husband Dakota laughed at first, but now calls me the ‘de-shedding queen’. I even tried a forehead patch and mouth tape on him.
“It may look strange, but it’s breathable, comfortable and helps keep your mouth closed while you sleep.

“I feel so much more confident about my skin since I started doing it. It’s my twenty minutes of pampering in the evening and something fun to look forward to.
“I also really like the routine, it feels like a weighted blanket for my face.”
Mayte says she used to suffer from disturbed sleep, but that since she implemented her routine, she sleeps better. She feels like she can “do anything after a good night’s sleep.”
In February 2023, she discovered a skin care subscription box that also included under-eye and forehead patches, which she began using “occasionally.”
Although she did see some changes initially, she said they were short-lived.
Mayte said: “I saw some results, but they weren’t permanent. I knew I had to do more.”
Since June 2024, she has been performing her full routine, sleeping with the band and tape on three nights a week.
She said: “I have quite deep crow’s feet and I was worried about a double chin before my wedding in June.
“The jaw strap is like a waist trainer for my face.

Mayte shared her morning routine on TikTok, where she filmed herself “shedding” the treatments she used to sleep with.
She said, “First I do my skin care, wait for it to set, and brush my teeth. Then I put on eye patches, a hairnet, a jaw band, and finally mouth tape.
“I breathe through my mouth and kept waking up with a dry tongue before I used mouth tape.”
Mayte wants to show people “the results over time” and the realistic side of using anti-aging skin care – by showing wrinkles and how she treats them in her videos.
She says she was “prone to acne and had acne in school too,” but since following the morning routine, she has noticed a huge difference in her skin.
She said: “My skin looks much more radiant and my wrinkles are less visible.
“I uploaded a before and after photo of the results of using the jaw strap. You can really see the difference.
“I make sure to put disclaimers on my videos because this is my skin’s reaction, and everyone’s skin is different.”

She says the ‘shed’ is now an important part of her nightly routine and she will continue to do it.
Mayte said: “It’s something I look forward to. It helps me keep a consistent routine, and it not only helps me look good, it makes me feel good too.
“I also get a lot of positive feedback from people.
“Some people say that the mouth tape has changed their sleep pattern.
“And others say the silicone patches gave them a shiny feeling.”
