I transformed my stair railings – the ‘wood’ effect made me say ‘holy macaroni’
A creative mum has left people in awe after giving her ‘crusty’ stair railing a completely new look.
DIY-loving mom Lauren Rose has been doing up her new home this summer, most recently refurbishing the “dusty, crusty” banisters.
According to Lauren, the condition of the white building was “horrible” and she couldn’t wait to transform it, albeit on a budget.
Instead of ripping out the existing stair railings and replacing them with new ones, the mother decided to get creative and spruce them up with a lick of paint.
Before Lauren painted the area, she made sure to tape off the walls surrounding it first.
“Frog tape is your best friend here: it keeps the lines neat and prevents the paint from getting where you don’t want it,” she explained in the video.
Although covering the stair area took quite a bit of time, Lauren assured her that the remaining DIY steps wouldn’t take as much time.
“Once you do that, it goes very quickly.”
With the banisters and walls done, the creative mum set about sprucing things up with a few coats of Lazy Range’s Crème de la Crème paint. A 250ml pot costs £10.95.
According to Lauren, who said you didn’t need to sand the surface first, the cheap paint on the MDF railings also cured very quickly.
Two coats later, the creative mum was ready to use the second product for the makeover: Lazy Range’s French Chic Browning Wax, £17.95.
To create a more woodsy look, Lauren said she applied a thinner coat first, then went over it two to three more times with a smaller brush.
The mother responded strongly to internet trolls who had advised her to buy real wooden stair railings and windowsills, but said that was not an option for her.
“Not everyone has a lot of money. I’m just a mom trying to make a home out of her house and I’m trying to do it on a budget.
“Besides, this house isn’t mine, so I can’t just take everything out and put whatever I want in it.”
Lauren praised the budget-friendly project, noting that it was “the perfect option to get a higher-end look without actually having to pay top dollar for it.”
