I tried dupes for the £479 Dyson airwrap, TikTok’s £27 curling iron was so easy to use

IF you’re like me and spend your days scrolling through TikTok videos, then you’ve undoubtedly seen the Dyson Airwrap in action.

It seems like everyone and their mom has the viral hair tool with over 3.7 billion views and count on TikTok, but at £479 it’s a bit out of my price range.

Despite not having the money for the real thing, I was determined to get my hands on something similar so I could have an effortless blowout in the comfort of my own home.

Luckily, many brands have created dupes of the must-have styling tool, and I tried the latest offering from Revlon and a TikTok purchase to see which worked best.

Both are considerably cheaper than the Dyson, but are certainly in different price ranges, with the Revlon One-Step Blow-Dry Multi Air Styler 5-in-1 costing £79.99 and the TikTok 5-in-1 hair styler costs £27.65.

Both come with five different attachments to create different hairstyles and dry the hair, here I share my thoughts.

Hair type

For reference, my hair is medium to long and thick.

It often takes about half an hour to dry with a hairdryer and leans towards the coarse side, meaning it gets dry, frizzy and knotty easily.

The Revlon hair dryer brush went viral on social media with over 85 million views on the app, but now they’ve added more attachments to the mix.

Attachments include the blow-dryer brush, a root dryer, a paddle brush to smooth the hair, an oval brush that adds volume, a round brush and a curling iron with four temperature settings.

One thing to note is how loud and heavy the Revlon styler is. When I used it to dry my hair, it was as loud as my hairdryer and my arm hurt after five minutes.

The blow-dryer brush is great for drying hair in large sections, but because it’s so large you’ll need to use the root dryer to get into the scalp afterwards.

After it dried, I moved on to using the curling iron attachment. It took a few times to get the hang of it and maintain a curl, but once I did it was easy to use and I had Nice tousled waves – exactly the look I’m going for.

One thing to note was that I had a hard time getting the clip-on fasteners off the handle – not because they were too tight, but because they were so hot to the touch.

I also noticed that the heat made my hair frizzy in places, so I had to apply a gloss afterwards to soften it.

It also doesn’t work exactly like the Dyson Airwrap – which blows hot air through the entire attachment to create a hold style.

Best Dyson Airwrap Alternatives You Can Find on Amazon?

There are plenty of affordable alternatives to shop for instead of the Dyson Airwrap at various retailers.

It appears that the Revlon brush blows hot air out of the attachment – it warms it up, but doesn’t use the air to grab your strands.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that my hair still held a curl hours later and the hair styling process became much easier than usual.

The TikTok store also has five attachments that look very similar to Dyson's

Buying from the TikTok store is something that, as a millennial, I’m honestly dreading, but for the sake of research (and because I couldn’t get my hands on B&M’s viral £19.99 Elle hair styling tool), I decided to go through the to bite the bullet.

It’s currently on sale for £27 and there are regular offers, so when I got the box I didn’t expect to be blown away.

But once I did, I was stunned to see how similar the attachments were to the Dyson Airwrap with its round drying attachment, round brush, curling irons and straightening comb.

Once I secured the dryer to the handle (which was a little harder to fit than the Revlon tool), I was pleasantly surprised to hear that it wasn’t too loud and was very lightweight for a hair tool.

The smaller hair dryer head allowed me to get close to the scalp and dried my hair relatively quickly without getting too many knots (something that often happens with my hair dryer).

My hair also didn’t look too frizzy once it dried, which almost never happens, and I went in with the curling iron.

It works the same way as the Dyson: by using the hot air to wrap your hair around it and hold it in place.

I liked the curls of this, but I did notice that they fell out quite quickly, even though it took ten minutes to do just one side of my head.

Final verdict

Both hair tools worked well – I did find that Revlon held a curl longer, but was trickier to master.

I also noticed that it got very hot, too hot, to the point where it became painful to take the attachments off and left my hair frizzy.

While the TikTok version was much easier to use, I found it didn’t curl as well, but was more of a ‘real’ dupe of the Dyson.

Depending on your budget, both are a good option, but for price and ease of use, I would go with the TikTok styler.
